New France

In royal colony New France, a shipload of 'bark skins', indentured servants having no alternative the a three year term to worse punishment in France, are eagerly awaited by and auctioned off to colonists. Monsieur Claude Trepagny gets hold of willing carpenter Rene Sel and openly reluctant thief Charles Duquet, both assigned as lumberjacks for his big building plans, but puzzled by his superstitious beliefs. The English Hudson Bay Company dispatched Hamish Goames and his trusted Indian scout Yvon to investigate the fate of another agent. The town is buzzing with intrigue, including the setting up of Iroquois Indians for a murderous raid on colonist families. Girls came with the same ship, to be nun-prepped as brides for the affluent colonists by mother Sabrine, who even knows teaches one to fake virginity after an abortion.

Monsieur Claude Trepagny cares surprisingly little for the escape of Charles Duquet, whom he and Rene Sel, who swears ignorance and loyalty despite having vouched for Duquet, believe doomed in the forest, but he's actually found, mocked and sort of adopted by an Iroquois village. Claude is just elated that he's about to be assigned a 'fille du roi' bride, while Rene has trouble keeping Claude's present woman Mari at distance, who flirts with him and confides about Trepagny's ambitious plans with an already built home. The curate reluctantly accepts Claude's help installing the new church bell, having noticed his heirloom Cathar (heretical sect) cross pendant. Hamish Goames and Elisha Cooke keep searching for/ to eliminate the creek massacre survivors and plotting for the future of the Hudson Bay company and various deals, leading to more violence and burning. The 'royal' girls plot for good husbands and futures, even if that means swallowing poison to induce an abortion.

Monsieur Claude Trepagny instructs René Sel to lumber on for his 'sky view' behind Mari's back, then goes star with exotic gifts at the dance party the nun organizes for the potential husbands to pair up with the 'filles do roi'. Runaway Duquet is further taunted and ridiculed, even by squaws, at the Indian village, fears the worst but is just thrown out, then seeks employ in the town, only successful when he arrives just in time to witness Thom being cautiously locked away by Hudson Bay agent Elisha Cooke, whose trouble with staff, especially Thom's father Gus Lafarge, and informers continues, while Hamish Goames, who keeps inquiring about the Iroquois murders, is mugged and his Indian can't prevent the stable-kept priest Clape being dragged back by his order, and flogged by the superior as presumed murderer.

The Law of Two

Monsieur Claude Trepagny distributes sweats and advice no more to the mother superior's liking then his union with gold-digger Melissande before all 'filles du rois' marriages are notarized, and he can take her to his 'doma(ine)', where she can barely wait till daylight to inspect his riches, while squaw housekeeper Mari gloomily watches outside. Chief Ratahsenthos's Iroquois party comes collect their hanged dead, and seize a priest who happened to pray there. Town captain Bouchard can't spare men for a possibly pointless search, strained by reporting to the Québec intendant and the dirty games of Hudson Bay schemer Elisha Cooke, who prefers to go in the stocks rather then give up, trusting his dodgy recruit Duquet, whom Trepagny formally releases as useless, who steals from the agent cash and incriminating papers and lets Thom run away instead of putting the simpleton knave down as ordered. A squaw discreetly nurses a badly burnt settler. Returning, the warriors bump into René Sel, who is ax-dealt. Hamish Goames is rebuked by his Hudson Bay superior for abusing company means for his 'private justice', and instructed to take over from the missing agent.

Intendant De Fer's arrival from Québec forces the Wobik town captain Bouchard to let Cooke, whom widow Mathilde taunted shamelessly like she stirred the captain, go from the pillory, albeit banished with Duquet, and orders a search for the missing priest, which he orders the superior to join as seasoned Iroquois expert. Trepagny allows Melissande, who expects to control him from the bedroom, to take charge of the household, at squaw Mari's expense, and seeks Wendat Indian his dangerous mission, while René Sel remains an Iroquois captive. Delphine is divorced by her 'incompatible' husband, who can't expect another bride. The Hudson Bay company further disappoints Hamish Goames, whose new boots blister horribly, and trusted Indian Yvon on their quest.

The Wobble

Captain Bouchard's rescue party ignores Trepagny's warning against attacking the Iroquois to free the tortured priest and Sel, leading to a gruesome massacre on both sides, one Indian scout returning home with his mate's corpse. Squaw maid Mari leaves the Trepagny home, warning Melissande they'll all be slaughtered, and after a haughty sendoff even she presses the yellow deputy to escort her to palisaded Wobik town, where she seeks shelter at the inn, requiring Mathilde to chase paying Hudson Bay customers, whom Renardette attacked. Hamish Goames finally finds his brother in law James Cross, who claims to be 'dead and to be forgotten', admitting his part in the staged settlers and Indians massacre, but ends up agreeing to return.
