Everyone is up in arms when Brendan Kearney is fired for telling his 10-year old students they could choose not to go to church when they grow up. Assumpta suggests that direct protest is required and a group of them are soon protesting in front of Father MacAnally's house. Meanwhile Liam and Donal come up with their own moneymaking scheme after seeing Enda Sullivan panning for gold in the local river. Things don't quite work out as planned. Father Clifford is worried about Mairie Kilfeather when he suspects her husband Jimmy is beating her. Things get out of hand however. Ambrose and Niamh are trying for a baby and the whole village seems to think it's their business as well.

Brian gets a new attractive, flirtatious housekeeper, much to the annoyance of Niamh. Feeling low and unwanted, Niamh is no help to Assumpta who is short staffed behind the bar. But things begin to look up as Niamh shows she is the only one who knows how to control Brendan's new pack of 10 year old delinquents.

When two strangers show up in Ballykissangel acting suspiciously and apparently shadowing some of the locals, rumors spread that they're revenue officers checking to see if everyone is paying their taxes. Ambrose knows who they are but refuses to say, even to wife Niamh. It seems that everyone in Ballykissangel has something to hide from Kathleen the shopkeeper, to pub owner Assumpta Fitzgerald to all-purpose businessman Brian Quigley. Assumpta is fed up with it all and is thinking taking up an offer from an old friend to partner in a wine bar in Dublin. Brian returns home to find that his house has been burgled. Of real concern to him is that his duplicate set of books has been taken from his safe. His old nemesis, Mossy Phelan, has a role in it all.
