Episode 1
Mon, Oct 16, 1995
With Felix by her side helping her move, Felicity is in Halifax starting medical school. Things are not going well as she is the only female in the class, with her professors trying to dissuade her from continuing. Off in the distance, Felicity and Felix spot Gus Pike. Ever since Gus left Avonlea to return to being a sailor, Felicity and Gus have not seen each other, nor have they made a recent commitment to each other about a future between the two. Although Felicity still has feelings for Gus, she is reluctant to speak to him as it appears that he is courting another woman. Meanwhile, a seemingly delusional beggar flower woman on the street named Eliza recognizes an artifact on Gus' possession that she sees as belonging to Ezekiel Crane. Gus suspects that she has a connection to his past, perhaps she even being his mother, despite Gus being told that his mother, also named Eliza, is buried at a grave-site in Avonlea. Gus and Felicity figure that Eliza needs a supportive environment in which to regain her memory and her true identity. Their plan could jeopardize Felicity's future in medical school.

As a fund-raiser for the hospital, Avonlea is hosting a Fair and Bachelor Auction at the White Sands Hotel. For the auction, the men are preparing picnic baskets, for which the women will be bidding and sharing with their preparer at a social following the auction. Beside Simon Tremayane who doesn't like the fact of the activities taking over the hotel, most townsfolk are abuzz about this event, the women thinking about on whose basket they want to bid, and the men dreaming about who will bid on theirs. On the female side, Muriel Stacey convinces Hetty King that love is not solely the domain of the young; Izzy Pettibone has her eye on a particular basket, despite she believing that that basket is already accounted for; and adolescent Becky Lester, who comes from a poor family, wants to attend the auction and bid on a basket, but she has little money to bid let alone get a new dress to look presentable at the event. On the male side, Felix King is hoping that a certain female will bid on his basket despite knowing that another has her eye on it; and Simon Tremayne, the self-professed life long bachelor, is made to believe that if he puts together a basket that a certain woman will bid on it. Little is spoken openly about who wants who to bid on each basket, although one can only hope that the men and women who want to be together do end up together.

Janet's latest visit with and goodbye to Cecily at Thornhill Sanitarium is even more emotionally difficult than usual. Janet learns of a death of a boy around Cecily's age, and Cecily, still missing home, is feeling sorry for herself. Shortly thereafter, a group of poor boys - newsies - from Brooklyn arrive at the sanitarium. They were sent to Thornhill on the charity of the newspaper guild. One boy in particular, Louie, seems to have a disruptive attitude. Despite their initial antagonistic meeting, Louie and Cecily become friends, he calling her Miss Perfect. What Cecily sees in Louie is someone who makes her forget about the death and illness surrounding her. Louie's mentality is that if he will die soon anyway, no one is going to tell him what he can or cannot do. But Louie's antics continually get Cecily into trouble with Miss Marsden, the sanitarium's administrator. These events may threaten Cecily's ability to stay at Thornhill. But before Alec and Janet's next visit which may be their last to Thornhill, Cecily has to try and convince those at Thornhill that something else is needed for her and Louie's emotional and physical well-being.

Each holding a raffle for the same charity at the same time is the latest feud between the Royal Order of the Daughters of the Dominion (RODD) and the Royal Order of the Knights of Prince Edward Island (ROKPEI), the primary women's society and secret men's society in Avonlea respectively. One other issue that the women are discussing is the imminent visit to Toronto of Prince George, the Prince of Wales. They are hoping that he will make a stop in Prince Edward Island. They learn mistakenly that he indeed is doing so, which gets the women making secret preparations for his visit. One other issue the men are discussing is membership recruitment. Simon makes a suggestion about a possible recruit: Felix. With his questions about the group, Felix adds some sobering thoughts amongst the ROKPEI members about the group's existence. Meanwhile, Janet is feeling emotionally lonely with Felicity away at medical school, Felix always at work, Cecily still at the sanitarium and Daniel away on vacation with Aunt Eliza. Wanting to feel useful but with what few skills she feels she possesses, Janet answers an advertisement in a women's magazine to start a home based business. After receiving her first shipment, Janet quickly learns that the business is a sham. Not wanting Alec to bail her out, Janet gets into deeper trouble with every measure she takes to fix it. But Janet's troubles become a meeting point for the RODD and the ROKPEI.

Among the passengers on the latest train stopping in Avonlea are four people who have a range of history with Avonlea. The first is Arthur Pettibone, who is on a break to visit with Clive and Izzy. He promises Izzy that he will not argue with their father on this visit. The second is pretty Miss Greta Steig, who is on a probationary period as the White Sands Hotel new head housekeeper. Her employment is a bone of contention between Simon and Hetty. But those working with her may find her efficient ways just a little too efficient. The third and unexpected fourth are Sara Stanley and her nanny, Louisa J. Banks, respectively. It's been six months since Sara returned to her family home in Montréal. Sara's trip to Avonlea was originally planned to be without Nanny Louisa. Time has not healed any of the wounds between Hetty and Nanny Louisa, especially regarding Sara's welfare. Each has planned an extensive trip with Sara to expand her horizons - Hetty's to be across Canada, while Nanny Louisa's is across Europe. But unbeknown to either of the two, Sara has her own plans of attending a prestigious school in Paris, to which she has already been accepted. While Hetty and Nanny Louisa plan and feud about Sara's future, Sara has to decide how to do what she wants without hurting the two people who probably have her best welfare as their primary concern. Meanwhile, romances are budding in Avonlea. Unfortunately, no one is quite sure who is interested in who, or is unsure if the person with who they are interested is interested back. The people involved in this confusion include Felix, Simon, Arthur, Miss Steig, Sara and Izzy.

Rachel suffers a stroke, which paralyzes the right side of her body. Her son Robert in Saskatoon comes for her to take her back with him, which all concerned are hoping is only a temporary situation until Rachel is well enough to care for herself again. But because of his own personal situation, he is unwilling and unable to take Davey and Dora, who he sees as legally not Rachel's or by association his responsibility, as Davey and Dora were legally Marilla's wards. Hetty offers to take the Keiths until Rachel's return, however long that may be. This transition is difficult for all three of Davey, Dora and Hetty. Dora is concerned that Hetty will go the way of both Marilla and Rachel and leave her and Davey. But the more obvious problem is between Hetty and Davey. Hetty has never had to take care of a child as rambunctious as Davey. And Davey is taking out his frustrations on Hetty, those frustrations stemming in part from guilt that he may have been the cause of Rachel's stroke and that Rachel is never coming back. It isn't until a gesture is made, regardless of the end product of that gesture, that Davey, Dora and Hetty can live together in Rose Cottage in harmony.

Davey has once again gotten into trouble at school, this time for copying Dora's homework assignment. He is beginning to dislike school more and more. After hearing that Wiley Lester, a boy his own age, is working instead of going to school, Davey thinks that he himself would like to work instead of attending school. On Olivia's advice, Hetty, Davey's guardian in Rachel's absence, decides that perhaps Davey should get a job to show him that working is not as glamorous as he may believe it to be, which in turn would make him want to go back to school. Olivia talks a reluctant Jasper into hiring Davey to work at the cannery. Jasper's reluctance is due in part to the most recent Davey caused accident in Jasper's workshop. But Jasper's thoughts of what Davey should get out of this work experience differs from Hetty's. It also shows Lionel Lester what may be best for his own son.

Felix is taking a leave of absence from his work at the White Sands to take charge of the farm work while Alec and Janet are away. But after Digger chases after a couple of foxes in the woods and after Aunt Eliza reads about the high price of fox stoles, Felix has the idea to raise foxes as a business putting the farm work aside, which is much to Felicity and Aunt Eliza's chagrin both for Felix abdicating his responsibilities and endangering the lives of the other farm livestock. He plans to start with those two foxes and breed them. After Felix tells her his plans, Izzy wants in as a partner. Due to logistics and Felicity's criticisms, Felix and Izzy have to find a place to build the fox pen where it is both out of the way and unnoticed by their critics. When Felix feels he needs an influx of cash to make the business a success, he enlists the help of Nat Lester - who Felicity does not trust due to their relationship as co-workers at the general store - who is old enough to co-sign a loan. This transaction forces an unwilling Izzy out of the business. But Nat and Felix's unfamiliarity with the underlying meaning of the loan and the term "collateral" combined with Nat's view of what it means to be a businessman may spell trouble for the pair. But Felix may have more regrets about how he treated Izzy in the venture. Through it all, Enoch Cain, the bank manager, may have a slightly different view of what Felix and Nat are doing compared to their naysayers, and which he demonstrates with his own "business" transaction with Nat's adolescent sister Becky.

Although it is a surprise to her, Muriel promptly accepts Clive's proposal of marriage. Almost everyone is happy for them such as Hetty who hijacks the responsibility for organizing the festivities. The one person who seemingly is unhappy is Izzy despite she being the one who originally set up the two. Izzy is afraid that Muriel's presence in the house will change her relationship with her father. Izzy's uncertainty is bolstered by the other kids talking about stepmothers and the Cinderella fairy tale. Clive's proposal coincides with him being offered the job of Chief Superintendent of Schools for the province. Despite the job's prestige, he is unsure if he should accept the job seeing as to Izzy's obvious discomfort about the marriage, of which Muriel is also aware. The job would require much travel, leaving Muriel and Izzy alone at the house. Clive decides not to tell either Muriel or Izzy yet of the job offer. Meanwhile, the students at the school are chipping in together to buy a wedding present, but are short of cash for what they want to buy. Davey believes he's come across a sure thing to raise more money, the sure thing stemming from a story told to him by a couple of street urchins. When he ends up losing all the money for the gift, he has to figure out what to do.

Having recovered from her stroke, Rachel decides to make the train trip back to Avonlea from Saskatoon despite it being the middle of winter. On the train close to Williston, Nova Scotia, Rachel suffers another stroke and is taken to a local hospital. Without identification on her and without the ability to speak, Rachel is listed at the hospital as a Jane Doe. Believing she may die alone and unknown in the hospital, she instead decides to sneak away and take the train back to Avonlea. She barely makes it home. Despite her precarious health and based on the urging of Davey and Dora, Hetty decides that Rachel should stay in Avonlea at Rose Cottage rather than Robert coming to take her back to Saskatoon. Because Rachel requires around the clock care, Hetty will need the assistance not only of Davey and Dora, but others to take care of Rachel while maintaining some semblance of their regular lives. But over the long run, all, including Rachel, will have to decide who is best equipped to care of her, which also includes the consideration of what will happen to Davey and Dora. Pierre seems to be the one who taps into what is truly in Rachel's heart.

Felix is having troubles at school and is in real danger of not graduating with his class. Because of his difficulties at school, Hetty decides to relieve Felix of his duties at the hotel, which is a double blow for him since his work at the hotel is one of the few things that gives him true pleasure. It's a bad time for Hetty's decision as the hotel is the site of an upcoming royal wedding. Felix decides to take extraordinary measures to get away from his troubles. With the wedding, the royal family in question is headed by its matriarch, the Polish Countess Polenska. Her son, Count Marek, is the groom, his bride being Adele MacPhee, who happens to be Pierre's sister. Pierre has not seen either his sister or his mother, an ethnic Irish scrub-woman named Maggie MacPhee, in twenty years. This gathering brings together many who are keeping secrets: Pierre was unaware that Adele was the bride in the wedding; Pierre told his family that he owned the hotel, and as such Maggie offered the hotel for the wedding on behalf of Pierre; the Polenskas believe Adele's family to be wealthy and cultured (in part because of Pierre owning the hotel), the misunderstanding which neither Pierre or Maggie make any effort to correct; and the Polenska fortune is almost gone. If any of these secrets come to light, Simon and Hetty will find out that no one has the money to pay for the wedding.

Believing he has a solution to both Felicity and his own problems, Dr. Snow asks Felicity to be his assistant, to which she agrees. The Kings receive news from Thornhill Sanitarium that Cecily's lungs have cleared and that she is well enough to go home. The tuberculosis is dormant within her system, and the doctors have every confidence that it will remain so with proper care at home. As such, once Cecily arrives home, Janet and Alec treat her like she is still sick and won't allow her to do anything, this against the thoughts of former medical student Felicity and against the wishes of Cecily herself, who just wants to be treated as a normal child. Others in town also treat Cecily like she is still sick - if Alec and Janet treat her as being so, why shouldn't they? - which means keeping their distance from Cecily, and making sure that Cecily keeps her distance from them. Meanwhile, Felicity is still trying to figure out what to do with her life following her decision not to go into medicine. She wants to wait for Gus's imminent return to Avonlea before she makes a decision on her future. She is assisting Seth with the care of newborn Alice, as Seth, alone in the world, soon needs to return to work or else lose his job. Sally, the head operator of the new Avonlea telephone exchange, fuels gossip in town through the telephone lines that Felicity not returning to medical school is because she failed. But Sally has a more important second-hand message directly for Felicity, the information which is unconfirmed.
