The Avatar State

Aang and friends arrive in the Earth Kingdom to begin his earthbending training, but a local general convinces Aang that all he needs to do is learn to control his Avatar state. Azula, Zuko's sister, arrives to escort her brother and uncle back to the Fire Nation.

Aang, Sokka, and Katara go to a secret cave to get to Omashu while avoiding Fire Nation attacks so that Aang can learn earthbending from King Bumi. Meanwhile, Zuko and Iroh are still adjusting to their lives as fugitives, and Iroh accidentally ingests a dangerous plant when he made tea. Zuko and Iroh decide to go to the Earth Kingdom so that Iroh can get medical aid after getting a rash from the white jade flower. Aang, Sokka, and Katara finally make it to Omashu, but they learn that the city has been seized by the Fire Nation.

Return to Omashu

After finding out that the Fire Nation has taken Omashu. Aang, Katara, and Sokka sneak into the city so they can bust out King Bumi, but things get complicated when Mai's younger brother, Tom-Tom becomes a stow away. Aang tries to bring Tom-Tom back in exchange for King Bumi's release, but Azula decides not to fulfill her end of the deal. Aang tries to get Bumi out, but the king convinces Aang that there is another earth bending master who can teach him. Aang finally returns Tom-Tom to his parents and he goes off to find the earth bending master that Bumi has talked about.

Still searching for an earthbending teacher, Aang and his friends stumble across a small earth village. When they hear about an underground earthbending tournament, they decide to go to it. Aang finds a teacher that fits the description of King Bumi. Her name is Toph Beifong, a blind, 12 year old girl who is tougher than she looks. When they meet, Toph is at first reluctant, because her parents don't know how good of a bender she is. After her parents discover her secret life, she decides that she wants to join the Avatar gang to help him master earthbending.

Zuko Alone

Zuko decides to go in exile on his own without his uncle. During his journey, Zuko must defend a family and a group of villagers from Gow and his thugs. Zuko learns about his grandfather's passing, his father becoming Fire Lord, and his mother's disappearance through a series of flashbacks. Zuko returns to the village to save a young boy who has been captured by Gow after he shows off a knife Zuko has gifted him earlier. Zuko soon fights off Gow and his thugs with his swordsmanship, he soon unleashes his fire bending on them after experiencing another flashback of his mother. The villagers are shocked by this revelation. Zuko reveals he is the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation and the son of Ozai & Ursa. Zuko tries to return his dagger to the boy, but he refuses to accept his gift. The villagers begin to shun Zuko and he leaves the village on his ostrich horse to parts unknown.
Episode 8
The Chase

Team Avatar is getting chased by a mysterious machine, they become sleep deprived when they try to get away from Azula and her two friends. Katara and Toph get into a heated argument, she calls the earth bender out on her unhelpful attitude. Aang realizes the reason why they are being followed by the crown princess and her friends is because of Appa's shedding. Aang and his friends finally clean Appa up and he tries to create a fake decoy trail with the fur to trick Azula and her friends. Aang is finally cornered by the princess, she reveals that she is the younger sister of Zuko. Katara, Toph, Sokka, Iroh, and Zuko arrive to stop Azula, but she pretends to surrender to Aang and everyone else, she shoots lighting at Iroh as a distraction. Katara tries to help Iroh, but Zuko angrily rejects her offer. Team Avatar begins to part ways with Zuko and Iroh, the four friends finally gets some well-deserved sleep after being chased by Azula all day.
Episode 9
Bitter Work

Aang is finally excited to learn earth bending from Toph, but he begins to have a difficult time with the art. Sokka goes hunting, but he gets stuck in a fissure, after he tries to hunt a baby saber-tooth moose lion. Meanwhile, Zuko has been nursing his uncle back to health after he was injured by Azula. Iroh tries to teach Zuko how to redirect lighting by using a special technique he learned from water benders. Zuko begins to have a difficult time on trying to create or redirect lighting.

The Library

When he learns that there is a lost Library with all the knowledge in the world, Sokka convinces the others to seek it out in hopes of finding a weakness of the Fire Nation.

The Desert

Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph escape the library to face the desert without the benefit of Aang's flying bison, Appa. The group knows they must get the information they obtained from the library about the upcoming solar eclipse to Earth Kingdom capital of Ba Sing Se, as it could very well make the difference in the ongoing war with the Fire Nation. Aang, who has always felt somewhat isolated by the realization that he is indeed the last Airbender, considers Appa and Momo his only connections to his previous 100-year ago world. When Appa is stolen by Sandbenders, Aang is visibly devastated and without direction or hope. Katara really shines in this episode as she must deal with Aang's despair, Sokka's cactus-induced hallucinations and Toph's lack of support or good ideas to solve their dilemma as she too feels they are just trapped in a 'giant bowl of sand pudding.' The highlight of this episode is when Aang finally confronts the Sandbenders who Toph recognizes as those who stole Appa. A showdown ensues and Sokka, Toph and the Sandbenders flee for their lives in fear of seeing Aang transform his rage and pain into the 'Avatar State.' Despite the apparent danger Katara remains in the whirlwind of sand unshaken. Again, we see the growing 'understanding' between Katara and Aang continue to develop. Katara trusts Aang enough to know he will not hurt her in the 'Avatar State' and Aang trusts Katara enough to let his defenses down to be vulnerable, but only with her. Katara pulls Aang back and he returns sobbing quietly in her arms. Meanwhile, Uncle Iroh and Prince Zuko successfully evade two groups seeking their capture as Fire Nation fugitives. Through Iroh's membership in the "Order of the White Lotus", they secure safe passage to Ba Sing Se to 'hide in plain sight' as refugees.

The Serpent's Pass

After getting tickets for the ferry headed to Ba Sing Se, the gang meets an old friend. They skip the ferry ride to help some refugees, one of which is going to have a baby, get to Ba Sing Se. They must lead the refugees through the Serpent's Pass, a dangerous mountain-side path surrounded by water.

The Drill

After arriving at the great wall of Ba Sing Se, Aang and the gang discover that the Fire Nation has constructed a great drilling machine to penetrate the wall. The drill is also followed by an army of Fire Nation troops. Also, Zuko and Iroh are having trouble hiding the fact that they are both Firebenders.

City of Walls and Secrets

The Tales of Ba Sing Se

This episode focuses on the little events that each character does on his or her own in Ba Sing Se. It starts with Katara and Toph finally connecting with a girls' day out. Iroh helps different members of the community near his new home and ends his tale with a "special" picnic. Aang decides to help a zoo keeper with his animals. Sokka battles a poetry teacher in haiku in front of the all female class. Iroh accepts a date on Zuko's behalf. Zuko may have even enjoyed himself for once. And the tales end with Momo on a search for Appa, interrupted by a pack of stray cats that resemble tiny panthers.

The Earth King

Aang and his friends try to prove to Earth King Kuei that Long Feng and the Dai Li are covering up the war that is being conducted by the Fire Nation. Aang and his friends try to show the secret passage way that Long Feng has been using, but that's already been destroyed. Aang and his friends go to the walls of Ba Sing Se and they show Kuei the Fire Nation Drill. Kuei soon discovers Long Feng's treachery and he has his traitorous advisor arrested for treason. At the palace, Aang and his friends discover the letters that Long Feng is hiding from them. Aang goes to the Eastern Air Temple to meet Guru Pathik so he can master the Avatar state, Sokka goes off to meet his father, Katara stays at the palace so she can discuss the invasion plan with the Council of Five, and Toph goes off to meet her parents. Unbeknownst to Earth King Kuei or Team Avatar, they don't realize that Azula and her friends are disguised as the Kyoshi Warriors and there is a bigger conspiracy going on. Meanwhile, Zuko has become seriously ill after returning Appa to Aang. Iroh has been nursing Zuko back to health. Zuko has been having a series of strange dreams.
Episode 19
The Guru

Aang receives guidance from Guru Pathik on mastering the Avatar state so he can learn what to expect for the upcoming invasion. Toph has been captured by Xin Fu and Master Yu, after being lured into a trap. Toph is able to escape her captors by using her newfound art of metal bending. Sokka reunites with his father, Hakoda, who is the chief of the Southern Water Tribe. Katara meets with the Council of Five to discuss their plan on stopping the Fire Nation from taking Ba Sing Se. Meanwhile, Zuko is finally feeling better after going through a fever and he helps his uncle run his tea shop. However things take a turn for the worse, when Katara finds out Azula and her friends have disguised themselves as the Kyoshi Warriors and the Dai Li has arrested the Council of Five. Zuko tries to fight off Azula, but he is captured. Aang senses Katara is in trouble and he cuts his session with Pathik short and he goes off to save Katara from Azula, without giving a second thought about listening to the guru's advice about the Avatar state.
Episode 20
The Crossroads of Destiny

Aang, Sokka, and Toph head back to Ba Sing Se to save Katara, they soon discover that Azula and her friends have infiltrated Ba Sing Se, by pretending to be the Kyoshi Warriors. Aang and his friends must rely on Iroh to save Katara and Zuko from Azula and the Dai Li. Meanwhile in the crystal catacombs, Katara angrily calls Zuko out for all of his misdeeds he has caused towards her and her friends. Zuko admits he's done a lot of terrible things. During their search for Katara and Zuko, Iroh gives Aang some advice about choosing love and happiness. Katara and Aang try their best to fight off Azula and the Dai Li, but Zuko begins to side with his sister in hopes of getting his father's approval. Katara becomes dismayed over Zuko's betrayal. Aang realizes that he and Katara are outnumbered, he enters the Avatar state by letting go of the person he loves, but he is severely wounded by Azula. Iroh fights off his niece and nephew, giving Katara time to escape with Aang. Katara, her friends, and the Earth King escape on Appa and she uses her vial of the spirit oasis water to heal Aang's wound. However, Ba Sing Se has fallen and Zuko begins to wonder if he made the right decision.
