Sokka and his sister Kya - later renamed Katara, must travel the world to find masters for Aang, who is the Avatar. However, they must evade a critical foe, Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation, who wants to capture Aang.

More than one hundred years have passed since the Fire Nation attacked the other three portions of the humankind: the Water Tribes, the Air Nomads and the Earth Kingdom. Only the Avatar, the only human capable of bending all the four elements: air, water, earth and fire, could stop them, but when the world needed him the most, he just vanished; nobody knows why. In their tribe, Katara and Sokka are left in charge of the village in the absence of their father, who left to join the Earth Kingdom against the Fire Nation two years ago. While in a fishing expedition, the water-bending abilities of Katara accidentally reveal a human while she was arguing with her brother, Sokka. Then, she hits the ice, freeing a boy with a white arrow in his head and a bison. The name of the boy is Aang, and his flying bison is named Appa. Not too far from there, the light spectacle calls the attention of Prince Zuko, who wants to catch the Avatar, and his uncle, who seems more interested in drinking good tea and having a peaceful life.

After Aang and Katara fall into a trap inside what is left of a Fire Nation's ship, a flare is sent as a result. Sokka banishes Aang from the Water Tribe, and Katara considers going with Aang to learn how to waterbend. As the Fire Nation approaches the Water Tribe of the South Pole, Sokka valiantly prepares to defender it. Prince Zuko comes down from the ship and easily defeats Sokka, who nevertheless manages to hit Prince Zuko in the back of the head with a boomerang. Prince Zuko announces that he is looking for the Avatar. Aang arrives to help the Water Tribe because he saw the Fire Nation's ship approaching. It is revealed that Aang is the Avatar, even though he is just a child.

Episode 3

Aang is excited about going home (the Southern Airtemple) for the first time in one hundred years, but he is shocked to find out that the temple is deserted. Aang tells Sokka and Katara about his childhood as they explore the temple, but they soon discover something that Aang never expected. Meanwhile, Prince Zuko must make repairs to his ship and the only way he can do it is to dock his ship at his rival's naval base.

The gang flies to Kyoshi island, previously named for Avatar Kyoshi, one of Aang's past lives, with high hopes for some Koi surfing. Once getting there they meet the Kyoshi warriors, a small band of woman soldiers. When captured, Sokka's ego is severely damaged. In an attempt to heal it, he challenges the Kyoshi warriors and ends up learning more about fighting and developing a romance with the leader, Suki. Meanwhile, Aang is being adored by the town's female population. Katara seems annoyed but is only concerned for Aang's safety. When Zuko arrives on Kyoshi and begins to wreak havoc on the small island Aang makes the decision to leave, no longer endangering the lives of the people living there. Zuko follows.

Aang takes Katara and Sokka to Omashu, where they disguise themselves to make sure no one will panic over the Fire Nation. While having fun, the get caught and sent to the presence of the city's crazy king. Katara and Sokka end up in the danger of creeping crystal rings and the only way they can be freed is if Aang can complete 3 challenges sent by the king. As the day wears on, Aang becomes more impatient and his friends become more trapped in the creeping crystal.

In a nearby Earth Village, the gang meets a teenage earthbender named Haru. This village lives in fear of the Fire Nation, for soldiers there capture any earthbenders they can find.

After Aang, Katara, and Sokka run out of money, they meet a fisherman who confronts Aang about running away from his destiny as the Avatar. Sokka goes with the fisherman to earn some money. Aang tells Katara why the fisherman was indeed correct and tells her why he was in the iceberg when they met. Iroh also tells the crew about what happened to Zuko, why he has a scar, and the reasons why he is banished. A terrible storm begins to form, and Aang must save Sokka and the fisherman while facing his fears as the Avatar. Zuko must put aside his selfish reasons for hunting Aang to save his crew.

Sokka and Katara meet Bato, a friend of their father, Hakoda. Aang begins to feel left out, and he hides a map from Katara and Sokka, fearing that his friends might leave him. Sokka and Katara find out that Aang hid the map from them. Sokka and Katara decide to go with Bato so they can be with their father. Aang resigns himself to go to the Northern Water Tribe on his own so he can master water. Sokka and Katara begin to regret leaving Aang and decide to accompany Aang to the Northern Water Tribe. Meanwhile, Zuko has hired June, a bounty hunter to find Aang. During the ensuing fight with Prince Zuko, Aang is able to get Katara's necklace back. Katara thanks Aang for getting her necklace back from Zuko.

Aang is excited to meet a master firebender, wanting to learn the skill early, but Jeong Jeong doesn't want to teach Aang the skill because he has to master water and earth first before he can learn to firebend. Roku convinces Jeong Jeong to teach Aang to firebend, and he reluctantly agrees. When Aang tries to show off the skill to Katara, he accidentally burns her hands, and Sokka becomes furious at Aang for injuring his sister. Katara heals her hands at the river. Aang realizes the importance of the lessons Jeong Jeong was trying to teach him.

Aang, Katara, and Sokka arrive at the Northern Water Tribe. Aang and Katara meet expert waterbending master, Pakku, and he agrees to teach Aang waterbending but refuses to teach Katara. Pakku only trains male waterbenders to fight, and Yagoda trains female waterbenders on healing, which frustrates Katara. Sokka meets Princess Yue, and he falls for her. Aang agrees to teach Katara his waterbending lessons privately, but it does not sit well for Pakku. Katara becomes frustrated over Pakku's stubborn attitude, and she challenges the waterbending master to a fierce duel. Pakku recognizes Katara's necklace, and he reveals he made the necklace for Kanna many years ago. Pakku realizes he drove away the love of his life because he was only trying to follow Water Tribe traditions, and he finally agrees to train Katara as a waterbender. Meanwhile, Zhao and his fleet prepare to attack the Northern Water Tribe.

Zhao and his army launch a massive attack on the Northern Water Tribe. Sokka readily joins the water tribe warriors to defend the tribe from the invading forces. Sokka is removed from his position after getting into an altercation with Hahn, Yue's arrogant warrior fiancé. Chief Arnook gives Sokka the task of protecting his daughter, Yue, he accepts the task of protecting the princess from any harm. Meanwhile, Zuko infiltrates the Northern Water Tribe to capture Aang. Katara tries her best to protect Aang from the crown prince, but she gets defeated. Zuko makes off with Aang, who is still in the spirit world in hopes of getting guidance from Tui and La.

The Fire Nation continues their assault on the Northern Water Tribe. Zuko has captured Aang and he takes refuge in a cave in the frozen tundra. Sokka, Yue, and Katara are able to locate Aang, they rescue Zuko from dying in the freezing cold. Aang reveals to his friends that Tui and La are in danger, they all make it to the Spirit Oasis to stop Zhao from killing Tui. Aang warns Zhao that killing the moon spirit will only cause the world to be out of balance. Iroh agrees with Aang's statement and he warns Zhao to release Tui, he reluctantly releases the moon spirit back in the pond. In a fit of rage, Zhao kills Tui and Iroh takes down the Fire Nation soldiers, causing Zhao to run away from Iroh's wrath. Iroh notices that Yue has the moon spirit's abilities, she transfers her life into Tui's and she is able to revive the moon spirit. Yue says goodbye to Sokka and they share a final kiss. La condemns Zhao for killing Tui and he is imprisoned in the Fog of Lost Souls. Zuko decides to give up on searching for Aang so that he can recuperate and he leaves with his uncle. Pakku plans on taking the water benders and healers to the Southern Water Tribe, so they can restore their sister tribe. Pakku appoints Katara to be Aang's water bending teacher. Meanwhile, Fire Lord Ozai assigns his daughter, Azula to capture Aang.
