Episode 1
Astronaut Chris Hadfield, former NASA medical researcher Dr Kevin Fong and psychologist Dr Iya Whiteley put twelve exceptional candidates through a series of gruelling physical and psychological tests to discover if they have what it takes to become an astronaut. In the first set of tests candidates must hover a helicopter, take their own blood sample and be tested for claustrophobia, physical fitness and mental agility. Those who fail to make the grade can be asked to leave at any time.

The remaining candidates move on to the next phase of the selection process devised by astronaut Chris Hadfield and his panel of experts. Some are pushed to their limits in a simulated emergency splashdown - in which they have to escape from a submerged capsule. At Britain's biggest space-tech firm, the candidates must successfully operate a groundbreaking robot - the Mars Rover. A social event may seem like a chance to relax, but Chris and his panel are using it to scrutinise the character of the candidates before choosing those that will progress to the next stage and those who will be returning home.

The candidates must complete swim tests - swimming lengths in their flight suit and working as a team to assemble a weighted cube underwater. They then take a spin in a rotating chair and simulate manually docking a spacecraft at the ISS.

The testing steps up a gear as the remaining candidates head off to a secret facility in Sweden. They are deliberately deprived of oxygen to see if they recognise the symptoms of hypoxia and they are tested in a human centrifuge.

Leadership skills are tested in a survival challenge. The panel are joined by two experts to conduct probing interviews. The remaining candidates head off to the Kennedy Space Centre competing for a place in the final.
Episode 6

The finalists head to the Shuttle Landing Facility on Florida's Space Coast to consider the risks of the job. They experience weightlessness at 30,000 ft and dive down to an underwater facility.
