In his London club, Victorian gentleman Phileas Fogg's statement that technology may enable traveling around the globe in 80 days as claimed by a publication meets a wager, for £20,000, then an insane fortune, and plans to leave next day. His sickly old butler being unfit, he hastily orders a valet from an agency, but the post is hijacked by the club's just fired dishwasher Passepartout. The latter fears most their first stop, Paris, relieved it's only to catch the train to Italy. Alas, the Commune revolution prevents any connection, and the fraudster meets his brother Gérard, whom he failed to raise after father's death, now a revolutionary aiming to draw them into an attempt on the President's life. Although not amused that his voyage is covered live under her mother's pseudonym Fix by Abigail, the daughter of club member and newspaper owner Bernard Fortescue, he gallantly saves her from the crowd, thus losing his luggage to looters, partially restored on nuns' orders after he gives them cash.

Phileas's part avoided the French train standstill by hot air balloon, but mismanaged it crashes, luckily near the Italian railway to Brindisi. Having halted the train to mount, they become the focus of increasingly hostile questions, notably from businessman Niccolo Moretti, a widower taking his chubby, imaginative teen son Alberto, who dreams of a Verne-style moon landing, to his aunt in that port city. In London Fogg's wager opponent is broke, but gets an extension till Christmass. An earthquake rendered a rail bridge dangerous, but Alberto incurred an urgent leg wound. Phileas masterminds daring plan to cross without most passengers or load. With Passpepartout and Fix bumbling to sprinkle some matter for friction on the rails, and cannibalizing all wood aboard instead of the dumped cokes, the arrive just in time to board the mail-boat to the Suez Canal.

Fogg's party finds travelling from Suez to Aden, to catch the ship to Bombay, blocked for several days. Desperate, Fineas accepts a dodgy offer from a lowlife to lead him and Passepartout trough the desert by camel, leaving Abigail behind for her own safety as promised to her father. They are however left to die as the camels and provisions are stolen, Passepartout confesses being an impostor. By sheer luck, Abigail manages to persuade local sheikh Medjuel El Mezjuel Mezrab, falsely portrayed in her newspaper as the camel herd for whom ill-reputed lady Jane Digby wrecked her last prestigious marriage, to take her on a catch-up mission which turns into a rescue after a sand storm and assault on camel back from a hostile desert brigands clan. The truth about the surprising heroes proves most damning for father Fortescue, yet Abi goes public with it.

Fogg, Passepartout and Abigail are stranded in an Indian village where a wedding is about to take place. With the promise of a guide the following day Fogg agrees to stay. However, Passepartout has been bribed to cause further delay in order that Fogg will lose the wager, and gives him a powerful drug. Suddenly the Indian Army arrives and arrests the groom Anand for desertion. It is up to the bride's mother Aouda to revive Fogg in order that he may speak for the accused man.

Phineas's part finally arrived in Hong Kong, but the bank can't pay him his money as a document hasn't arrived from London, bugging the staff doesn't help as Kneedling, who found Passepartout failed to sabotage properly, had convinced the bank to withhold Fogg's money, posing as a police detective. Meanwhile governor Sir Henry Rowbotham's bossy wife Clemency forces him to host a garden party in honor of the now famous explorer, who gets a personal loan. Passepartout meanwhile visited local criminal acquaintance Jiang Liei, who promises him the needed funds if he steals a priceless white jade artifact from the governor's wife, which he does at the party but gets caught out. Fogg risks a flogging to make him talk.

After their latest set-back, Fogg, Abigail and Passepartout find themselves stranded on a desert island. Secrets are revealed and, with the clock ticking, they must learn to forgive and work together to make their next stop in time. Back in England, Bellamy and Fortescue receive some bad news.

After the ship brought them from Japan to San Francisco, the trio takes a stage coach trough the Rockies, to catch the train for New York. They are stopped by a former slave Bass Reeves turned Deputy United States Marshal in the IndianTerritory, who demands they take him in with his captive, Ku Klux Klan bigwig Ambrose Abernathy, to his lyncher murder trial in Louisiana. Fogg accepts, but they are followed by Klansmen, who ultimately catch up on horseback and hold them at gunpoint. Only Abigail happened to be in the stables and must mount a rescue before Fogg is forced to cut off Passepartout's finger. In London, Bellamy's creditors obtained a court ultimatum.
