Teenaged Emma Karn, is missing and Ken, her well-connected Beverly Hills lawyer dad, is much more worried about political repercussions than about his underage daughter. Grace Karn calls LAPD Det. Sam Hodiak (David Duchovny) for his help and he recruits young talent, Off. Brian Shafe and Off. Charmain Tully, to go far out undercover on the teen party scene. They learn Emma was seen with a guy named Charles Manson. Their worries are fueled by Manson's (arrest) jacket: he is 33 and has spent half of his life inside for crimes ranging from possession to rape and attempted murder. Hodiak and Shafe get new information from Manson's PO; Ken has a very close encounter.

Joyce Nankin, a 62 year old white female, is found murdered with a brick lying near her body in South Central. This sidetracks Squad Six-William-Nine (Sam and Brian) from tap dancing all over Brian's bigmouth snitch, Mike Vickery. Ken and his partner fret and fuss about the dirt "Charlie" has on them and arrange a meeting with a record producer. No one in primarily black South Central is talking to the cops; when "Bunchy," a mouthy member of Nation of Islam interjects himself, he gets arrested and ticks off a Vietnam vet. Delusional Charlie continues to use, abuse and apply the screws to further his music career, at any cost. Bruce makes assumptions about Sam and shoves his personal life in his face; but, Bruce is angry at the wrong people. Sam's son, Walter, returns from 'Nam, which worries Sam. Grace Karn conspires with Sam to expose Ken's lies and find Emma, but the truth is so much more than any of them could fathom.

Charmain thinks Jason Elkins, her Rams pro-football player boyfriend, beat her; she is willing to go over and above to prove it. Brian reunites Jimmy Jr. with Charlie and Roy the Viper goes ballistic on Jimmy Jr. when he pulls out a firearm for Charlie. After hearing his son called nice but insane, Sam hooks up with his ex-wife for a pity party. Charlie shares philosophy with Katie: You can either be afraid or be what makes them afraid. Charlie and Jimmy Jr. swear vengeance against Sam.

A film star was brutally murdered in a crucifixion-style incident. Misogynistic Cutler puts a boot down on Charmain to keep her from doing her job; she gets to retaliate with her boot on a leering lawyer. Sam learns the dead film star was gay and asks Brian to cruise a gay bar to get some info into the case. The Lieutenant returns and the inquiry into the dead film star is killed, even though Brian was inches from nabbing the killer. Mary Brunner returns with child--did she also bring the stocks and bonds? The Manson Girls first string, including Patricia "Katie" Krenwinkel and Susan "Sexy Sadie" Atkins begin to coalesce.
