Genetecist Yvonne Carmichael is approached by a stranger who is impressed by her speech to a Commons select committee and with whom she finds herself having anonymous sex in a broom cupboard - a fact she obviously keeps from husband Gary. Nonetheless she is excited by experience and, suspecting Gary of having sex with his research assistant Rosa, continues the purely carnal affair, largely in public places where they could risk detection, such as Apple Tree Yard with its CCTV. However colleague George Selway finds out and lets Yvonne know in a very brutal way.

Following Selway's sexual assault Yvonne feels unable to tell anybody except anonymous lover Mark for fear that a medical examination of her would expose his DNA. He arranges a meeting with a friend who explains her options but she rejects them and is similarly unable to confide in her divorced friend Susannah. When Selway starts texting her she considers leaving her job, shocking Gary ,and feels guilty when son Adam moves out. She has another, sexual, encounter with Mark to plot revenge on Selway before learning that her suspicions of Gary's adultery are not entirely unfounded.
