Present: ME, incapacitated by back pain, believes a young boy across the street is being locked in his room and left alone for hours. Rene negotiates between a Cherokee artist's interpretative mural titled, "Holocaust: No More Forever" and the Holocaust Remembrance Committee who commissioned it. The actor Gary Paul Davis plays the artist, Charley Majors. Past: ME and Rene have boyfriend issues.

M.E. and Colliar realize how much their lifestyle has changed when they move into a new apartment. Rene's long lost ex-husband comes to visit. Present: Rene and Turk have a spirited disagreement over potential candidates for a Girls At Risk scholarship before Turk finally gives in to Rene's choice; Past: "Bob Goodie's Dance Machine", a TV dance show, is coming to Birmingham and Teresa desperately wants to be one of the featured dancers on the show; in exchange for dance lessons from Rene, Teresa promises to support Rene's campaign to have a Black Studies curriculum at school.

Present: M.E. and Colliar practice tough love with Kelly and Ajoni can't find a babysitter in order to attend a party. Rene defends the civil rights of the dead when an abused son doesn't want his abusive father buried next to his mother who was also abused by his father. Past: The kids experience the hippie subculture.

Present: As M.E. visits Fillmore to speak with Davis's teachers about his slipping grades in the aftermath of the tornado, she is caught in the middle of a school shooting; shocked and devastated by having to watch a student die in the gunfire, M.E. turns to food for comfort; after Rene suffers an arrhythmia while they're on a date, Turk insists that she see a cardiologist; on the strength of the article M.E. writes about the shooting, Glenn offers her a weekly column; Rene inspires her neighbor Muriel to take the positive step of creating an animal rescue organization after Muriel's beloved dog is accidentally put to death at the pound. Past: Colliar is bullied and beaten when he supports Rene's running for Freshman Class Representative; after trying to help Colliar during the beating and getting a black eye herself, M.E. is angry when he succumbs to pressure and votes against Rene.

Present: Rene's painful recovery from her heart bypass surgery continues, while M.E. and Colliar deal with the growing faith of their son Davis. Past: Rene deals with embarrassing teenage heartbreak while her family hosts a visit from her mother's friend, Mrs. Scott. In the midst of Rene's personal loss, events change the world for everyone, and demonstrate for Rene what true loss really means.

Present: Rene returns to work and finds that her illness has shaken her self-confidence. Several clients, concerned about how much her health may impact her ability to represent them, have left the firm, and she is scrambling to retain the ones, which remain. An obnoxious client who is suing his employer for wrongful termination and is being counter sued for sexual harassment by his supervisor particularly troubles her. After a pre-trial deposition, she realizes that her client is lying and that his lawsuit is frivolous. With the help of a little pep talk from Joe, Rene rediscovers her spunk, tells her client just what she thinks of him, and fires him. At home, her self-consciousness about her scar initially creates a barrier to intimacy with Turk before she finally regains her sense of herself and her trust in his love. M.E.'s whining and self-pity about her weight reaches a fever pitch, and she starts to drive everyone crazy. While she acknowledges that she's "sad". Past: Rene explores the Black Panther group or so she thinks.

M. E. ponders becoming involved in a class action lawsuit that has been filed against a comedy club. Rene confirms her commitment to Turk by proposing to him. Rene helps a young teen with divorced parents. Robert F. Kennedy is assassinated. Theresa learns disturbing facts about her ancestors when M. E. does a family tree for a school project.

Young Rene and M.E. have a party in the basement of Rene's house, and some of the boys get out of control in response to Rene's gift from her brother Elston, a dress with cutout windows that when Sara saw it earlier she forbids Rene from wearing it to the party. Present time, Turk's sister Rita Gail comes to town and takes control of everything around her, including a Terhune Family Wedding Ring. Present time M.E. is writing a story about the Business Fair in Birmingham that turns ugly when male participants grope two women exhibitors. Rene represents the two dressmakers that were groped by drunken men at the business fair. The police don't press charges, so Rene sues the city. Kelly tells M.E. that Ajoni lost his job, and M.E. encourages Kelly to ask Ajoni to ask Colliar for a job. Present, Turk proposes to Rene at dinner with Sara and Rita Gail there too, and presents a Ring that is not Rene's style. When Ajoni loses his temper at dinner with M.E. and Colliar he tells them he wasn't fired, that he quit his job because it has no future and he found out the University had saved a spot for him. He and Kelly walk out from the dinner. In the Past, Rene's parents, Sara and James find out that Rene wore the dress with that her brother Elston sent her from Canada where it is what the hip people are wearing, and blame her for the boy's reactions at the party by saying "boy's will be boys".

Present : Rene represents a man who was fired from a conservative company for refusing to cut their dreadlocks while M.E. vies with a well known wedding planner . Past - M.E. wants to get busboy job at a restaurant but disappointed when the owner offers the job to Colliar while Rene plans on attending Student Council meeting .
