An apparent victim of a tragic car crash, Janus wakes up to find himself in purgatory and despite the red in his ledger two angels, Samael and Sandalphon offer him a deal. Return to earth and carry out certain jobs on behalf of heaven and in exchange, years will be taken of his sentence in Hell when the time comes. As the jobs rack up, Janus begins to get suspicious that all is not as it seems. Aided by his new, unsolicited assistant Mara, a literal demon in disguise, Janus begins to investigate his own death and look more closely at the people he is now sending to meet their maker. As the evidence mounts that the very same angels putting him to work are the ones that orchestrated his demise, Janus learns that his targets are not agents of evil, but rather guardians of light and all he has done is hasten the arrival of the Armageddon. Aided by Mara, who reveals herself to be a demon sent to prevent the very same Armageddon, Janus must act to reverse the damage done and expose the duplicitous angels before earth itself is lost to a unholy war to end all wars.
