Episode 1
To All Our Boys

It's the spring of 1941, and with the state of the war, James' unit has gone into an expedited pace of training, he to be the pilot for a five-person team in the unit's first long distance training flight in preparation for the imminent entry into active battle. They are to treat that training flight like the real deal. What happens makes James need to examine his feeling of loyalty to his country and to his unit against how he can best provide service holistically. Back in Darrowby, little Jimmy has taken over life at Skeldale House, all the adults doting on him when they aren't dealing with other day-to-day issues, which for Siegfried and Carmody is their veterinary service, and Mrs. Hall and Helen volunteering for the war effort. With the veterinary service, Siegfried, in feeling snowed under, is convinced by Mrs. Hall to give Carmody more independent responsibility. Carmody's success or failure largely rests with what happens to Dot Fawcett's beloved cat Frisk, who she needs more now than ever for emotional comfort as she, otherwise alone, recovers from a hysterectomy. And following Mrs. Pumphrey's lead, Mrs. Hall wants to step up her volunteer activities, if only those with the power will let her.

Holding the Baby

It's James' first full day back and the collective at Skeldale House is struggling to decide what is best for him to do. With Helen's blessing after a crash course, James decides what he wants and what may ease him into life back home the simplest is a father-son day alone. With Mr. Dowson at the last minute requesting him to accompany Carmody on what should be a routine call, James will find that he is mentally not yet equipped to be father without mother, without someone else who has taken care of Jimmy, or without someone who has been a parent him/herself. With James taking care of Jimmy, Helen decides to see if her father and Jenny need help. In her obvious focus on Jimmy over the past year, Helen discovers that she has been replaced as the guiding female voice in Jenny's life by her new friend from the city, Doris, and not always in what she would consider a positive way, important at this time as Jenny is blossoming into a young woman. And Mrs. Hall and Siegfried are both having problems with Mr. Bosworth in he focusing on his own volunteer job as a night warden without a greater understanding of the big picture or the consequences of his actions. Siegfried and Mrs. Hall's interactions with Mr. Bosworth also place a strain between the two of them as her volunteer work is taking up more of her energies than he expected. The two may get a better understanding of why Mr. Bosworth is the way he is after a tragedy.

Homecoming

Everyone at Skeldale House is preparing for Jimmy's christening, with James' parents having made their way from Glasgow for the event. Certain issues have the potential to upend the event. While they are cordial enough to each other, there is an obvious strain between Helen and her mother-in-law. Helen can't help but believe that Mrs. Herriot Senior sees her as the harlot that stole her son away from her. Siegfried, as Godfather, is preparing a speech for the actual christening, although not asked for and probably not wanted by either James or Helen. Siegfried's time in preparing the speech is interrupted by multiple calls to see arguably one of his least favorite clients, Mr. Biggins, as he knows his diagnosis of what ails Biggins' goat is accurate but that skinflint Biggins is not heeding the advice probably in not wanting to pay for the medication or Siegfried's services for that matter. And James has a last minute walk-in client who he's never seen before, Mrs. Hanley whose pet dog Lucy has formed what appears to Mrs. Hanley as an unreasonable obsession with a stuffed toy. But the item that has the potential to place the greatest pall over the proceedings is a telegram addressed to Siegfried, a telegram during wartime which usually is unwanted grave news.

Tristan settles into life back at Skeldale, but Carmody has taken his bed - and his brother. Mrs Hall schemes to bring the boys together and sends them to Pumphrey Manor after an alarming report of an escaped animal from the Matron of the army convalescent hospital.

Pair Bond

This morning, James is feeling a little less than spry in the previous night out of heavy drinking with Tristan, who has another such evening planned tonight in working on and thus the anticipated completion of a lecture he is to deliver. While Tristan implements one delay tactic after another in having trouble putting his thoughts for the lecture down on paper, James dreads another night out but feels he should for reasons other than either wanting or not to drink with Tristan. Carmody is dealing with two issues this morning. First, Doris has come to Skeldale, his physiological abnormalities which he knows are signs that he is attracted to her. In having no experience with women or romance, he believes Tristan would be the best person for advice, which irks Siegfried who believes he is better suited at least to the art of courtship despite Carmody never having seen him in a romantic situation with a woman in the eighteen months he's been at Skeldale. Siegfried may have a chance to demonstrate that art as he meets a new client, long widowed Miss Grantley. And second, Carmody receives his exam results. While it is good news in he having not only passed but with distinction, he seems less than happy in not divulging other information contained in the letter accompanying the results. And Mrs. Hall is called off on a warden emergency by Mr. Bosworth as an unknown object has been dropped in the woods adjacent to a farmer's field, the worry being that it is an enemy bomb. Protocol states that the nature of the object has to be verified by a team of at least two wardens before further action is taken. While serious, Mrs. Hall is less than happy with the subsequent officiousness of Mr. Bosworth after the verification. She has to decide how best to deal with him, especially in light of discovering the mystery of how his beloved dog, Bingo, was poisoned which led to his passing.
Episode 6
Glass Half Full

With Carmody gone, Siegfried and James are feeling a little stressed in being understaffed. With James assigned to surgery, Tristan agrees to assist Siegfried on the rounds, only on the caveat that Siegfried treat him as an equal and not as a subordinate, and despite Tristan preferring to enjoy his time at home while he "works" on his military teaching responsibilities. Both Siegfried and Tristan's fears are realized in spending time together, they frequently butting heads in front of clients. That time together becomes more concentrated on their way back to Skeldale House, it which is not only affected by neither attending to a necessity, but by Tristan's realization of Siegfried's attraction to Miss Grantley, his pursuit of her which has hit a roadblock. Back at Skeldale, James is in an extremely giddy mood, something that Mrs. Pumphrey, who is there in a worry with Tricki, recognizes as not being good as the giddiness becomes more pronounced. With the eventual remote diagnosis of it being James' brucellosis having returned, Helen, worried in his temperature spiking and he becoming more delirious, has to attend solely to his needs which becomes illuminating for her, leaving Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Pumphrey to attend to Jimmy and with the practice, all the while Mrs. Hall not neglecting the large pot of strawberry jam already on the go on the stove with the bumper crop of fruit from the victory garden.

All God's Creatures

December, 1941. With the war, items for a traditional Christmas are hard if not impossible to come by, yet Mrs. Hall, in a bit of bartering, has been able to secure a goose for the Christmas table. And as Christmas Day is Jimmy's first birthday, he will still be spoiled on all sides, with Mrs. Hall debating on whether the Christmas table should include a traditional Christmas or birthday cake. As the Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in the Americans entering the war, Tristan has been placed on a new assignment in which he admits he has no expertise: a homing pigeon breeding program. Siegfried points him in the direction of Mr. Sykes, one of the most renowned keepers of pigeons in Yorkshire. Tristan will find that Sykes is probably typical of most keepers in being competitive with each other, Sykes who doesn't want a stranger, let alone a vet or someone with the military, snooping around. But in noticing at least one of Sykes' pigeons expelling green luminescent feces, not a good sign, Tristan ends up at least getting Sykes to allow him to take that bird in for testing. What happens with the pigeon has mixed results on Sykes' willingness to cooperate with Tristan subsequently. All these issues take a back seat when news hits the airwaves that the ship on which Edward is serving has been bombed by the Japanese and subsequently sunk. While she and everyone at Skeldale await news of survivors, Mrs. Hall puts on the stalwart face in "business as usual" regarding Christmas and Jimmy's birthday, although in a moment of true emotion having nothing to do with the ship or Edward directly, she openly questions man's taking of any life, all creatures great and small.
