Episode 1

While country-folk consider joining the army as a war looms in 1939, the Farnon brothers wisely argue James too is far more useful keeping the food production going. Furthermore, his wedding day is at hand, while bride Helen serves father Richard and kid sister elaborate breakfast to avoid her insecurity, but is firmly pushed to the altar. The Farnons also treat James to a stag party guaranteeing huge hangovers, while Siegfried and Mrs. Hall keep playing prankster games with the ring entrusted to best man Tristan, till the very moment. James has to be dragged away from the farmer he insisted to help with a cow herd, arriving unfashionably led and in messy attire.

James (Nicholas Ralph) finds his new (junior) partner status less lucrative and more demanding than expected, but when Helen (Rachel Shenton), still searching for her place in the household, offers to help in his place with paperwork, Siegfried (Samuel West) can't hide that he never actually wanted a partner with a say. Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) enjoys showing the practice rival's stuck-up daughter, Florence Pandhi (Sophie Khan Levy), his competence, saving their dog, and admits he needs to keep the surgery neat. Lone crone Kate Billings (Lynda Rooke) desperately but rudely seeks help with her calves' mystery poisoning. Siegfried can only confirm James tried everything possible, that is, until a loose horn fragment provides the clue. Siegfried allows James to take sole charge of a potentially lucrative ministry-recommended testing program.

Siegfried remembers his Great war horror when ordered after caring for the war horses to put nearly all down to save on expenses. Now his former CO, Major Sebright Saunders, calls upon Siegfried to cure his newly bought Irish thoroughbred, or put it down, a matter of overcoming fear patiently. Tristan claims some independence, resisting Siegfried's grim criticism, but is duly scolded for careless treatment of chemicals with lethal potential. James finds it hard to convince farmers to risk tuberculosis tests as put-down herds aren't getting fair compensation, with the farmers society chairman as his worst, miser adversary. Helen ridicules him being a push-over with clients who don't pay due fees, but fails as badly with a crone whose cat also proves a claw problem in the car and Tristan's surgery.

Episode 4

James is flat-out with the bovine TBC tests, leaving the Farnons to do most other work. He is grimly scolded and even summoned by the dreaded ministry official in charge, who scolds repeated administrative errors, one of which nearly leads to the wrong prize cow being slaughtered. A car change and paperwork help from Helen sort it out, even with the visiting public servant's compliments. Tristan finds Florence Pandhi not only appreciates his rescue of her dog, and the secondhand car he bought against Siegfried's judgment, but also enjoys his romantic side. While Mrs. Hall scares away from getting properly romantic when her admirer expects a kiss at a recital date.

Episode 5

With unresolved issues in Mrs Hall's life as witnessed by her reaction to her recent date with Gerald, it is timely that she should receive a letter from Edward asking to meet, he enlisted in the navy, somewhat not willingly, meaning that they may not get another opportunity to meet again in some time, especially if war is declared. But as recent history has shown, Edward may be a no show if he, at the last minute, decides that he is still not ready to see her to confront their estrangement, which would be another blow to her. With she gone, she has left a message for the Farnons to tend to some domestic duties to be accomplished in her absence. While neither brother really wants to do the work, they each clamor to attend to their more regular duties around the business, which takes a turn with Siegfried forgetting about a promise he made. In the process, Siegfried takes on a role somewhat unfamiliar to him, at least one he has not had in quite some time, while Tristan feels pushed aside to those house duties. And James and Helen are spending time at the Alderson farm. Helen discovers something about Jenny, which makes her confront her role in Jenny's life, both in the past and the present.

Episode 6

Chamberlain's pacification policy failing, Britain declares war on Germany, leaving men in doubt whether to volunteer, even James, whose veterinary skills are needed more at home. James can do only so much for Helen's father to avoid his herd being culled as a bovine TB case occurs, and risks losing his license as draft paperwork is sent to the ministry by accident. Tristan finally proposes to Joyce Pandhi and must learn to deal with her parents, local Joyce and Indian immigrant veterinarian George. Siegfried destines an abandoned dog as companion for Tricki Woo at Mrs. Pumphrey's estate, where she's installing a war hospice while planting food to supplement rations, but Mrs. Hall and their own dog already bonded.

Episode 7

This Christmas will be different at Skeldale House than past Christmases due to the war. James and Tristan are still waiting to hear if they will be called up into military service. They have taken in one of the evacuated children, a Jewish girl named Eva Feldman, who will be experiencing her first ever Christmas, while Mrs. Hall in particular tries to incorporate Eva's Jewish heritage into the household's events this holiday season. In addition, Mrs. Pumphrey tries to instill a little more joy into Eva's existence away from her parents. And there is no planned party at Skeldale this year. In not wanting to lose an opportunity, Mrs. Hall makes a unilateral decision to change the last item upon learning some news straight from the horse's mouth in a realization of some underlying feelings which she has been suppressing. Meanwhile, Siegfried, in treating River who has sustained an injury which may prevent him from running in an upcoming race, learns some news personal to him with regard to Tristan. While animal welfare has always been first and foremost to Siegfried, he may change his philosophy in this one particular instance with River taking into account how it may affect that issue with Tristan.
