There he challenges, with Tristan's support, Siegfried's blind authority, by refusing to put down the dog of his beloved Helen's dominant father Richard's brat daughter Jenny, who scared a neighbor farmer's sheep to dangerous stress, proving the canine can be trained instead. James and Mrs Hall also get Siegfreid to let Tristan treat an allegedly easy patient alone: a blind old Mrs Tompkin's only company, a budgie, which alas dies in his hand.

With Christmas approaching, James helps a sheep for free behind the ingrate grim farmer's back when called stat and finds Siegfried volunteers -possibly expecting a sherry treat- to check up on Tricki Woo, whose condition requires taking him to the surgery, but no cure seems to work. Tristan once more hides his exam results, causing another altercation with Siegfried despite finally having passed and shown gratitude. The house is flooded with guests, mostly after free drinks and food, plus children wanting to visit father Christmas, a rile now falling to James. Siegfried and Mrs. hall are as encouraging to each-other as hesitant themselves to invite their quasi-dates, while Tristan hears Margot accept a wedding proposal and Helen questions her future role after marriage. With Tricki not improving, Siegfried agrees with James's and Tristan's Mail Mary ideas for TCL from Mrs. Pumphrey and a coma-like cure.
