You've Got to Dream

Recently graduated from Edinburgh veterinary faculty, James Herriot (Junior) gets desperate for a job vacancy, so jumps at an offer in a rural Yorkshire town Darrowby. Local vet Siegfried Farnon already intended to stop interviewing 'unfit youngsters', but housekeeper Hall convinces him to give the youngster a chance, who arrives late due to the poor bus service. His first taste of the actual job is difficult. However, left fraternizing with the locals over ale, James gets into a situation which places the job in jeopardy. During what may be his last night, he sets out alone which may give him a reprieve.

Another Farnon?

James collects Siegfried's younger brother Tristan from the station and they accidentally crash Siegfried's car, albeit mildly. Tristan announces that he finally graduated from Edinburgh veterinary college and joins the practice. James takes him on his rounds, where they have trouble dealing with a cow suffering with milk fever. James fares better with estate heiress Mrs Pumphrey and her spoiled-rotten 'child', Pekingese dog Tricki Woo, which leads her to invite him to a party, where he meets someone unexpected. Something Mrs Hall discovers will place Tristan's homecoming in a different light.

Andante

Siegfried is spending the day at Darrowby Racecourse to demonstrate his abilities for the now open position he has long coveted as its attending veterinarian. While Hugh being on-site to attest to Siegfried long have treated his own racehorse, Andante, for years will help Siegfried's case, Siegfried will have to prove to upper-crust General Ransom that he being a plain country veterinarian as opposed not only to not being a horse specialist but not being a thoroughbred racehorse specialist makes him the best candidate locally for the job. Unknown to Siegfried at the time, what will affect his application is that James is at that moment attending to an issue with an ailing Andante, James having to make a split second decision in what he deems an emergency. While Siegfried and James are attending to their vet duties, Siegfried, in wanting him to earn his keep, has Tristan collecting on outstanding debts from their neighbors for services already rendered. While Tristan proves to be more than competent in this task, the temptations may be too great for him, especially in meeting the new barmaid, Maggie. And Helen is feeling much pressure in having to act as mother to Jenny, especially in Jenny neglecting her schoolwork in believing it not necessary to continue the family legacy as a farmer. As such, Mrs. Hall takes Jenny for the day in hoping both to relieve some pressure on Helen, and provide guidance to Jenny from someone other than her sister.

A Tricki Case

Tristan is on best behavior, anxious to convince Siegfried he's deserving of a study budget, urgent as he must soon leave for Edinburgh, but big brother's suspicion mounts with further disillusions. Mrs Pumphrey summons 'Uncle James' to examine spoiled pet dog Tricki Woo, who gets so fat the only realistic therapy is a cure away from the estate, at the Farnon home, but a basket full of expensive delicacies is too appealing for Siegfreid to send back, yet he makes an error as to its placement. Tristan volunteers to mind and 'coach' the lazy pooch, while ordered to deal with fiercer patients, including a terrifying shepherd. James deals with grumpy ingrate farmers unselfishly.

All's Fair

James is honored that Siegfried has appointed him to be the overseeing vet at the Darrowby Show, the annual fair taking place in the square. What James is unaware of is that Siegfried, and Tristan and Mrs. Hall for that matter, are just curious to see how James fares in knowing the pitfalls of the job, half in where much of the activity is to take place, and half in the nature of the fair goers. Siegfried, in turn, believes it's a good opportunity to be part of the fair by opening up the practice for an open house, complete with tours and demonstrations. Beyond his fair duties under officious and demanding Mr. Foyle, James will find his day is affected by two personal requests. The first is from Dick Rudd, a poor farmer who wants James' opinion on spending what for him is probably more than he can really afford to purchase a pedigree cow. And the second is from Helen, who wants James to vouch for the Aldertons' stud bull Clive to any potential buyers, Clive winning first prize in the showing which would certainly raise interest in a purchase. Something that Tristan reminds him of and seeing Hugh and Mr. Dobson secretly chatting makes James believe there may be a problem in him keeping to the latter request. Meanwhile, an unexpected person attends the open house who piques Siegfried's interest, which he doesn't want to admit. And James in turn mentions something to Tristan that spooks him.
Episode 6
A Cure for All Ills

Siegfried refuses to admit that he is ill, specifically with the flu, as he has a full slate of patients, including some surgeries, while James is already busy with his rounds. On those rounds, James is most concerned about Strawberry, the heifer he convinced the poor but happy-go-lucky Rudds to purchase. Having trouble breathing, Strawberry has what James diagnoses is an abscess on her larynx, something that developed after the Rudds purchased her. That abscess could kill her unless James' less than certain treatment works. Regardless, he has a sense of guilt despite the Rudds not blaming him for anything. And Tristan still cannot focus on his studies despite the pressures placed on him by Siegfried, and despite his exams being only a week away. Mrs. Hall may be the only one who can diagnose Tristan's problem as a lack of confidence, especially in always disappointing Siegfried. Through it all, Mrs. Hall and Tristan have discovered it is James' birthday, they who try, despite the Strawberry issue, to make it a happy day for him without him knowing they even know it's his birthday let alone that they are planning a surprise party.

The Night Before Christmas

James still has feelings for Helen and is struggling to cope as she prepares to get married to Hugh. On Christmas Eve James is called out to help a dog struggling to give birth and Helen volunteers to come along. But a thick fog comes over the Dales and it looks like the pair will be trapped together.
