Episode 1
Novelist Felix Cramer and his wife Elizabeth return from abroad to visit his childhood friend Richard Murray, now living with his artist girlfriend Helen and her teenage daughter Sally after leaving his wife Inga some years ago. However, over the evening it's clear that Inga still persists in his life when she later phones to say she has been attacked by a man she picked up that night. As Richard leaves the get together, Helen is resentful of her presence in their lives and sensing that she wants to confide in Elizabeth, Felix offers to pick up Sally from a nightclub for her. But when he does so an attraction develops between the two that they little realize risks destroying everything they hold dear.
Episode 2
Sally leaves school, but now she and Felix are involved in a full blown affair. As she awaits her exam results to get into university, Felix arranges for the two of them to go on a week's holiday in Cambridge as they try to keep their relationship a secret from the others. However, Elizabeth suspects that Felix is having an affair and confesses her fears to Helen, but she doesn't know who the person is yet. Meanwhile Richard is facing an inquiry into his job as a parole psychiatrist after one of his patients commits suicide and struggles to deal with the guilt.
Episode 3
Sally drops a bombshell to Felix and reveals that she is pregnant, but his reaction is not what she expected it to be. Confused, she turns to her mother Helen, who is horrified that Felix is her lover and the father of her child. Both are adamant that she must have an abortion, and in desperation Helen visits Sally's father Carey Hinde to try and influence Sally. But old passions are hard to resist and while there she ends up in bed with her old flame.
Episode 4
Sally is now at university, but is deeply affected by the abortion. Elizabeth, still ignorant that Sally was Felix's lover, tells Helen she feels their marriage has turned a corner, little realizing that Felix has a new mistress. That lover is Inga, Richard's ex wife, who spots his photo in the newspaper and sets out to seduce him in order to get closer to Richard. Meanwhile Sally, feeling isolated at university and having shunned both Felix and her mother Helen, decides to seek out her father Carey. But his revelation that he would of taken in her unborn child had her mother agreed shocks her, and angered by this betrayal writes Felix a letter that has the misfortune to fall into the wrong hands.
Episode 5
It's Christmas, but Sally isn't coming home. Instead she stays with Carey and his girlfriend Marsha, but she sees a different side to her father there, especially when Marsha suddenly goes into labour. Richard makes a New Year resolution to end his visits to his ex wife Inga, which panics Felix, who is already regretting getting involved with the increasingly depressed Inga. He is desperate to go on holiday to Venice, but Elizabeth refuses to go until after the opening of Helen's art exhibition. And it proves a deeply uncomfortable time for Felix when first Sally arrives with new boyfriend Jamal, then Inga turns up unannounced. As the pressure builds he makes a decision that he will live to regret, but it is Richard's actions that prove the catalyst for what is to come, as Inga has a secret of her own.
Episode 6
Richard is on the warpath, having discovered his wife's involvement in her daughter's abortion of his best friend's child. Having left Helen, he then seeks out Sally, who he finds in bed with Jamal, and confronts her. Inga learns that Richard has left Helen and turns up at her home to taunt her, hopeful that she may yet be able to win him back. Meanwhile Felix and Elizabeth are enjoying their holiday in Venice, totally oblivious to what is happening, and little realizing what is awaiting them as they head back home.
Episode 7
Felix is critically ill in hospital after being attacked by Richard. As Helen rings for an ambulance, Richard hands himself in to the police, leaving Helen to lie to Elizabeth, who is still ignorant of events. Sally tells Jamal she wants to just be friends, angering him and accuses her of using him to make her old lover jealous. When Sally learns that Felix is in hospital she begs her mother to see him, angering Helen who blames Sally for the whole situation. But as the police investigation continues, Sally's desperation to see Felix risk revealing everything to Elizabeth,.
