OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI - SEPTEMBER 20: Harrison Wallace III #2 of the Mississippi Rebels carries the ball against Sam Howard #15 of the Tulane Green Wave during the second half at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on September 20, 2025 in Oxford, Mississippi.
Justin Ford/Getty ImagesThe Rebels are still reeling from the departure of Lane Kiffin, who left Ole Miss to become LSU's new head coach in late November. His decision to walk out on Ole Miss in the middle of one of the best seasons in school history made headlines, but the Rebels have already turned the page. They promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to be the new head coach, and the entire program is eager to prove that they can win, even without Kiffin.
Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall is also on his way out after accepting Florida's offer to become their next head coach. However, unlike Kiffin, Sumrall will be coaching Tulane through the end of the season. There are more off-the-field stories surrounding this game than you would expect in a first round playoff matchup. It may all come down to which team is able to block out the noise and stay focused on football.
On paper, Ole Miss is the more talented team. They crushed Tulane in the regular season, and they've looked like national title contenders all season long. But it's been a turbulent month for the Rebels, and Tulane has the talent to upset even the best Power Four schools if they aren't on their A-game. Even as double-digit favorites, Ole Miss can't let down their guard or let themselves look ahead to a potential rematch with Georgia in the second round.
