LAWRENCE, KANSAS - NOVEMBER 08: Seth Trimble #7 of the North Carolina Tar Heels shoots over Hunter Dickinson #1 and KJ Adams Jr. #24 of the Kansas Jayhawks during the game at Allen Fieldhouse on November 08, 2024 in Lawrence, Kansas.
Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesThis is a battle of two blue blood franchises who are looking to put themselves into the conversation as title contenders. The Kansas Jayhawks and UNC Tar Heels were both bounced in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season, but strong recruiting and transfer classes had them back in the AP Top 25 preseason poll.
Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and UNC forward Caleb Wilson headline their respective rosters. Peterson is in the running to be the first pick of the 2026 NBA Draft, and Wilson projects as a high lottery pick in his own right. With Henri Veesaar (7'0") protecting the paint for UNC alongside Wilson (6'10"), Kansas may have to win from the perimeter. This could be a challenge for the Jayhawks, since they don't have many reliable shooters outside of Peterson and guard Kohl Rosario.
Kansas may have a slightly more talented team on paper, but UNC does have lineup advantages they can try to exploit. The frontcourt matchup will be one of the keys to the game, and it could all come down to how well Kansas center Flory Bidunga holds up against North Carolina's size. At the same time, UNC will need to find an answer to Kansas' deep rotation of dynamic and versatile wings.
It should be a fascinating chess match, as head coaches Bill Self and Hubert Davis will both be looking to secure their first big win of the season and put their program into serious postseason contention.
