Capital One Bowl

It's out with the old and in with the new, as BCS-baby ESPN kicks off a big heaping bowl of New Year's Day football festivities with the Capital One Bowl between Alabama (9-3) and Michigan State (11-1) in Orlando, and concludes with the Fiesta Bowl this evening. Expect to see a lot of the Big Ten, with conference teams involved in five of today's six games, including what could be the day's main event...the Rose Bowl, featuring conference champ Wisconsin taking on TCU in Pasadena. The Badgers offense ended the regular season on a huge roll, while the Horned Frogs boast the nation's top defense. — Dave Roeder

Two of the most exciting players in the game face off as Sidney Crosby and the Penguins host Washington and Alex Ovechkin in the Winter Classic at Heinz Field, which holds 67,000. Crosby and the Pens are no stranger to the annual outdoor game, having won the inaugural contest in a 2008 shoot-out in Buffalo. — Kelly McGettigan

The annual Vienna Philharmonic concert of Strauss family favorites, which has been broadcast every year since 1959 (and on Great Performances since 1985), continues with conductor Franz Welser-Möst leading the orchestra at Vienna's Musikverein.
