The Passage, Fox's sci-fi thriller based on Justin Cronin's best-selling book trilogy, is coming Jan. 14, the network announced Tuesday. The network also released a trailer for the series focused on 10-year-old Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), "the most important girl in the world."

The Passage tells the story of Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), a federal agent tasked with retrieving a young girl (Sydney) who's been chosen to be a test subject for a top-secret medical trial that could either eradicate all disease or cause the end of the human race. But Wolgast has a change of heart and goes rogue, so it's him and Amy against the world, with the feds -- led by his former best friend Clark Richards (Vincent Piazza) -- in hot pursuit.

The series is executive-produced by Friday Night Lights' Liz Heldens as well as Ridley Scott and Matt Reeves, neither of whom direct, unfortunately. But it is an expansive drama with more ambition than Fox dramas usually attempt.

The Passage premieres Monday, Jan. 14 at 9/8c on Fox.
