The first image of Season 5 shows the trio far from Serenity

JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley, Sweet Magnolias
NetflixIf you're the sort of person who loves Southern melodrama, then there's a very good chance you know about and have watched Sweet Magnolias, Netflix's series based on the novels by Sherryl Woods which follows the lives of three South Carolina women and the trials they face as they go about their lives.
Yeah, Sweet Magnolias doesn't have any sort of high-concept hook — it's just a story about some regular people living relatively regular lives, told in a way that rings surprisingly true. It's like This Is Us, but with a Southern twang and without the complicated plot structure.
As of January 2025, we've now gone through four seasons of tribulations with Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and the rest of the folks from Serenity, and naturally the fans are champing at the bit for any news about the future of the series, and we've been trying to wait patiently, but it's not entirely working. So let's look ahead at what's next for Sweet Magnolias.
More on Netflix:
Oh yes. Season 5 is confirmed, and it's even got a spot on the calendar now.
Season 5 of Sweet Magnolias is slated to drop on Netflix on June 11, 2026.
There haven't yet been any teaser trailers or any other videos teasing the upcoming season. But the release date announcement did come with our first still from Season 5. If you were worried the titular trio were going to be apart for long after Maddie moved to New York, you can relax — the first image shows them hanging out in the Big Apple.

Brooke Elliot, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, and Heather Headley, Sweet Magnolias Season 5
NetflixThe core trio is obviously returning, and the showrunner and most of the existing writing staff are slated to return for Season 5, per the WGA. We don't know who else from the cast is returning, since there hasn't been any word about any of the other members of the cast. Though if the main three spends a lot of time in New York, we'll probably see the other folks from Serenity a lot less even if everybody returns.
Warning: This section contains some major spoilers for Sweet Magnolias Season 4.
Season 4 of Sweet Magnolias was extremely eventful, starting with the news of the death of Maddie's ex-husband Bill (Chris Klein) in the second episode and continuing on through a finale episode that saw Maddie move away from her community in Serenity to start a new job in New York City. Meanwhile, Helen is planning her wedding to Erik, and Dana Sue is looking for a serious shakeup to her own status quo even as her daughter Annie plans to head to college in California.
While Maddie's move is pretty dramatic, it doesn't preclude JoAnna Garcia Swisher from returning as a series regular. Any number of things could happen in Season 5 to bring her back to Serenity for at least a little bit — Helen's wedding would be exactly that sort of event, since Maddie would obviously be a bridesmaid at the very least.
All four current seasons of Sweet Magnolias are streaming on Netflix.
