The fifth Resident Evil movie came out of the gate at the top of the box office, but it couldn't beat the franchise's three previous films.

Resident Evil: Retribution grossed an estimated $21.2 million, less than than the second, third and fourth installments in the franchise, according to Box Office Mojo. The fifth movie only beat the first Resident Evil, which brought in $17.7 million back in 2002, but the new film sold fewer tickets.

The Possession keeps grip on No. 1 during soft box office weekend

The week's other major new release, Finding Nemo 3-D, caught $17.5 million to come in second. Last week's No. 1, The Possession, took in $5.8 million. Lawless  followed in fourth place with $4.2 million. ParaNorman drew $3.04 million to grab fifth place.

The Expendables 2followed closely behind at No. 6 with $3.03 million. The Words snagged seventh place with $2.9 million.

Rounding out the top 10: The Bourne Legacy (No. 8, $2.8 million), The Odd Life of Timothy Green(No. 9, $2.5 million) and The Campaign (No. 10, $2.4 million).
