Pete Davidson Addressed His Breakup with Ariana Grande on SNL, and It was Kinda Perfect
A four-letter word *was* involved
The saga of Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson's whirlwind romance with, engagement to, and subsequent breakup from pop singer Ariana Grande has been at the tippy top of most tabloid headlines for months now, but last night the subject got even more intriguing.
Shortly before the show was scheduled to air, Grande dropped a surprise single called "Thank U, Next" which mentioned Davidson by name. Though brief, the lyrics about the comedian mention their almost-marriage and her gratitude for him. Many perceived the timing as no coincidence and waited anxiously to see how Davidson would react, if at all.
The comedian had already somewhat invited attention to the issue in a promo spot for the Jonah Hill-led episode earlier in the week, when he popped the question to musical guest Maggie Rogers, saying, "You wanna get married?" When she politely declined, he quipped, "0 for 3." So, Davidson again decided to address the pop culture elephant in the room during his appearance on a "Weekend Update" segment about some of the year's congressional candidates.
"The midterm elections are obviously a huge deal. And after I had to move back in with my mom, I started paying attention to them," he said to open the segment, before lambasting some of the people up for election during Tuesday's midterms. Later on, he took on a more serious, yet gentle tone, adding, "The last thing I will say is I know some of you are curious about the breakup. But the truth is, it's nobody's business, and sometimes things just don't work out and that's okay. She's a wonderful, strong person, and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world. Now, please go vote on Tuesday, alright?"
In other words, he basically became the talking version of that "Wow I can't believe this is why Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson split up" tweet that directed people to vote.org (with more than 3 million clicks registered to the link, by the way), and we are kinda here for it. Not bad!
