Nicki Minaj Apologizes for Using Malcolm X as Promotional Art for New Song

Nicki Minaj has apologized for using a famous photo of Malcolm X with a rifle in his hands as promotional art for her new song "Lookin A-- N----a."

The rapper posted the photo Wednesday on her website and Instagram (both have since been taken down) and was quickly barraged with complaints regarding her insensitive juxtaposition of the image with a racial slur.

Minaj addressed the issue in a lengthy Instagram post. "What seems to be the issue now? Do you have a problem with me referring to the people Malcolm X was ready to pull his gun out on as Lookin A-- N---az? Well, I apologize," Minaj wrote."That was never the official artwork nor is this an official single. This is a conversation."

Minaj went on to explain that she saw the photo while shooting a video for the song and she made the connection. "It is in no way to undermine his efforts and legacy," she wrote. "I apologize to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued. The word 'n----' causes so much debate in our community while the 'n----' behavior gets praised and worship. Let's not. Apologies again to his family. I have nothing but respect an adoration for u. The photo was removed hours ago. Thank you."
