She is the first American woman to land a triple axel at the Olympics

History has been made at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Mirai Nagasu became the first American woman to land a triple axel at the Winter Olympic Games, successfully completing the difficult jump during the team skating event on Sunday night. Nagasu is the third woman overall to land a triple axel during the Olympics behind Midori Ito in 1992 and Mao Asada in 2010, both of whom competed for Japan. Tonya Harding previously made history as the first American woman to land the jump in competition outside of the Games.
The historic moment was particularly triumphant for Nagasu, who was left off the 2014 Olympic team despite winning the bronze medal at the U.S. Champions. (Ashley Wagner, who finished in fourth, was selected for the Olympic team instead.) "I just remember four years ago, Mirai and I were in a dark place. Honestly, we were depressed that we weren't at the [Olympics]," teammate Adam Rippon recalled, according to ESPN. "I told her as we were going through that, Mirai, I'm so lucky to have you by my side. We're going to get through this together."
