Michael Strahan opened up to People about what went wrong at the end of his tenure as co-host of Live with Kelly and Michael this past spring.

The former NFL star started his new job at Good Morning America on Sept. 6. His departure from Live to take the GMA job was announced on April 19, which came as a surprise to his co-host Kelly Ripa, who took the next day off and was openly unhappy with the disrespectful way ABC executives handled the announcement. The network did apologize, but the damage was done: Strahan's final day at Live was moved up several months, and Strahan says in his People interview that his relationship with Ripa is over.

"At one point I think we were friends. I don't know what happened at the end. I learned a lot from her, though," Strahan says. He and Ripa hosted the show together for four years, and won a Daytime Emmy for their hosting just days after the blowup

"Toward the end of it all, we didn't really communicate that much," Strahan says. "I kinda looked at it like, 'It was what it was.' I come from a business where you have to collaborate. The show was going well? We're all winning. That's all that matters to me."

He says that he was disappointed that he was seen as the "bad guy" in the split, because he doesn't want people to think the breakdown in communication was all his fault or that he abandoned the show, and that he wasn't surprised by Ripa's reaction.

The search for Strahan's replacement at Live is ongoing.
