Lil Wayne Begins One-Year Prison Term

Lil Wayne arrived Tuesday at the Rikers Island jail to begin his one-year prison term on a weapons conviction, according to The Associated Press.

The rapper (real name: Dwayne Carter Jr.) pleaded guilty in October to attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. The charge stemmed from a July 2007 arrest. Wayne had previously pleaded not guilty, but later admitted to having a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun on his tour bus as part of a plea bargain for a reduced one-year sentence.

Wayne — whose sentencing was twice postponed in the past month, first for his dental work, then because of a courthouse fire — could be released in eight months pending good behavior. In the past few months, the 27-year-old rapper, whose latest album, Rebirth, debuted at No. 2 last month, held a "farewell tour." "Law is mind without reason. ... I'll return," he wrote on his Twitter account Monday.
