Legacies Will Have One HUGE Difference from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals

Get ready for some crazy monsters...

Even though Legacieswill share a lot of common ground with The Vampire Diariesand The Originals (how could it not when it's set in Mystic Falls and centered on the Mikaelson heir), but there will be one major difference.

Julie Plec announced at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that the format of Legacies will differ greatly from the two previous shows in the newly dubbed TVDU (The Vampire Diaries Universe) by telling monster-of-the-week stories. "There is definitely an overall big bad that we slowly hint at, but we're doing something on this particular series that I have never done before, which is embracing, not always but often, a monster of the week," Plec said.

"It's something we've been so, so excited talking about," said Danielle Rose Russell. "We're like, 'This is what's going to make our show different. This is what's going to make our show so good!'"

Plec didn't confirm whether there would be a procedural element of the show, but it seems unavoidable that the stories would incorporate that framing in some capacity if the kids are fighting a new evil creature every episode. Other CW shows (Supernatural, iZombie and most everything in the Arrowverse, to name a few) have implemented this style to great success though, which could mean Legacies' shift towards procedural storytelling will be a good thing for a series looking to freshen up a universe that's nearly 10 years old.

Legacies: Everything We Know About The Originals Spin-Off

As for the season-long storyline, we did get a hint that Caroline Forbes (Candice King) might be involved in it, at least in the abstract sense. While Caroline won't be appearing in every episode, she'll apparently be out on a mysterious mission regarding the "long term survival of [her] daughters." Anyone who watched The Vampire Diaries and The Originals knows that the twins are Gemini witches, making them coveted magical creatures for their ability to absorb magic and redirect it somewhere else. That ability could end up putting them in danger throughout the course of Legacies, maybe even from these various villains who will be threatening the kids of the Salvatore School of the Young and Gifted in the upcoming drama's first season.

Legacies premieresThursday, Oct. 25 at 9/8c on The CW.

(Full Disclosure: TV Guide is owned by CBS, a parent company of The CW).
