Former Jefferson Airplane drummer Joey Covington died Tuesday from a fatal car crash, according to The Palm Springs Desert Sun. He was 67.
Covington was not wearing a seatbelt when his car hit a retaining wall in Palm Springs, Calif. Covington was pronounced dead at the scene. Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved with the crash. A friend of Covington's told the paper that the drummer's wife suspects a heart attack or stroke is to blame.

Covington joined Jefferson Airplane in 1970 until 1972, replacing Spencer Dryden. He previously played with Airplane side project Hot Tuna. The new band, Jefferson Starship, posted "Rest in peace, Joey" on its Facebook page on Wednesday.
