What to know about the 2024 Summer Paralympics

Here, we break down what to catch and who to root for if you don't already have your cheering section ready.

When do the Summer Paralympics start?

The opening ceremony will begin airing live on USA Network and Peacock at 2 p.m. ET on Aug. 28. Ahmed Fareed and 13-time Paralympic medalist Chris Waddell will anchor this spectacular event. The actual games kick off on Aug. 29. There are 11 events, including gold medal events for para taekwondo, para swimming, and para cycling.

The Paralympics are scheduled from Aug. 28 to Sept. 8.

Where will the 2024 Summer Paralympics be held?

This year's Summer Paralympics is being hosted in Paris, France, but because of the variety and volume of sports being played and the number of athletes involved, events will be held in and around Paris, including the suburbs of Saint-Denis, Versailles, and Vaires-sur-Marne.

What sports will be featured in the 2024 Olympics?

This summer, 22 sports will be played. We expect wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, sitting volleyball, para swimming, and para athletics, a.k.a. track and field, to be just as popular as ever.

Who will appear in the 2024 Paralympics?

220 athletes will compete for the United States, an even split of men and women (110 each).

U.S. para athletics athletes at 2024 Paralympics

This is always a fan favorite. We've got 90 thrilling events for the guys and 73 spectacular events for the gals. This year, the Paralympics are dialing up the action with more athletes and medals than ever before. It's going to be the biggest and boldest cycle yet.

Keep an eye out for Nick Mayhugh and the rest of Team USA. Nick has four Tokyo medals under his belt, and we are manifesting more. His specialties are the 100m and 200m. He also lends his speed to the 100m relay, so we hope for another U.S. gold medal here.

How could we forget Hunter Woodhall, husband to gold medal long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall? Hunter is looking for another medal in the 400m. He already has two bronzes from Rio and Tokyo.

U.S. wheelchair basketball at 2024 Paralympics

Wheelchair basketball is a particular area of strength for the Team USA. The American team has consistently performed well, with the men's team winning numerous gold medals and the women's team achieving significant Paralympic honors.

Matt Scottis a veteran of the sport and has been a crucial player for the U.S. men's wheelchair basketball team. His experience, strategic playmaking, leadership, and scoring ability make him a pivotal figure to watch in Paris.

U.S. para swimming at 2024 Paralympics

Jessica Long is as decorated as para swimmers come. She is seasoned and has an impressive record in multiple Paralympic Games. Known for her versatility and dominance in various swimming events, Long has won numerous gold medals and set world records throughout her career. Her remarkable skill and determination make her a key to the U.S.A.'s Para swimming team, and she continues to be a strong contender for medals.

What is this year's Paralympic mascot?

So it will still be the absolutely adorable Phryges. But this one has something unique compared to its Olympic counterpart: proudly sporting a prosthetic. The Phryge wearing a running blade marks the first time since 1994 that a Paralympic mascot has been depicted with a visible disability. That's so cool.
