All six episodes of His & Hers dropped on Netflix on Jan. 8, bringing Alice Feeney's story of a separated couple and a slew of murders to life. The limited series stars Tessa Thompson as TV news reporter Anna and Jon Bernthal as Det. Jack Harper. Jack and Anna lived a happily married life until they were ripped apart by tragedy, and when a woman from their past is found murdered in their hometown, they both begin to suspect each other of the crime.

Sunita Mani also stars as Jack's partner, Priya; Pablo Schreiber plays Anna's cameraman Richard; Rebecca Rittenhouse is Anna's professional rival, Lexi; Marin Ireland stars as Jack's sister, Zoe; and Crystal Fox plays Anna's mom, Alice.

Everything you need for winter TV:

There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the entire series as more women show up dead and new evidence points to various suspects. If you've ever read an Alice Feeney novel, you know there's more to this world than meets the eye, and the finale culminates in a killer you might not have seen coming. Or, depending on your sleuthing skills, perhaps you did.

Warning: This article contains many spoilers for His & Hers, including a detailed description of how it ends.

What happens in the final episode of His & Hers?

Following the massive reveal in Episode 5 that Lexi and Catherine Kelly — a girl who was bullied at school by Anna and her friends — are the same person, the series opens with a flashback to when Catherine was just a girl at her family's lake house with her parents and sister, Andrea (Savanna Gann). Suddenly, Catherine is no longer the nice outcast that Anna kept recalling in her own memories, and she morphs into an actual monster. When Andrea makes fun of Catherine's weight and tells her to bring her inhaler down to the water before a boat ride, Catherine purposefully lets out all of the medication from the device in a pre-calculated plan to murder her.

As a result, her sister dies before the family can reach the shore, proving that Catherine has always been a killer.

The series then returns to the present day at the lake house, where Anna has just put the clues of Catherine/Lexi's identity together and becomes suspicious of Richard's motives of bringing her to the house. She calls Jack, who is mourning the death of his sister, and begs him to come to her rescue.

Jack immediately takes off, but he's thwarted by Priya, who confronts Jack with everything she has learned about him during her side investigation. She pulls out her gun and calls for backup, forcing Jack to knock her unconscious so that he can get to Anna. Of course, this makes him even more guilty in the eyes of the police.

More on Netflix:

Meanwhile, at the lake house, things don't look good for Anna when Richard catches her on the phone with Jack. A violent struggle ensues and Anna locks Richard outside of the living room before she wrestles with a rage-filled Lexi. She's angry about Anna supposedly setting her up on Anna's 16th birthday to be sexually assaulted in the woods, and it looks as though she's ready to kill to get revenge for that night.

As we know from the flashbacks, Anna had nothing to do with that awful setup and had always tried to be kind to Catherine. But, as a reinvented adult, Lexi doesn't want to hear it. The fight ends with Jack busting in and Lexi picking up Anna's gun, preparing to shoot them. Before she can pull the trigger, Priya, who has caught up on Lexi's real identity, shoots Lexi through the window, not knowing the gun Lexi had was empty.

Cue Richard's arrest for the murders, Lexi's death, and a rekindled romance between Jack and Anna. The show then flashes forward several months, where the happy couple are strong, steady and expecting another baby. But that's not the end. Not even close.

How does His & Hers end?

This might seem like a fitting end for a series with so many sad side stories, but the action doesn't end there. Skipping ahead in time, we see that Anna is back on the news desk and fielding several offers, including one from The Today Show. So her career is back on track, but she's taking the weekend off to spend time with her family.

During the weekend away, things take one final turn. Anna's voiceover turns out to be her reading a letter from her mother, which cues the ultimate flashback montage.

It turns out that Alice has been the killer all along, and was only pretending to be an older women with memory loss to avoid suspicion. As she explains in the letter to her daughter, she had been carrying guilt over the SIDS death of her granddaughter, and missed Anna when she disappeared for a year. So she watched old VHS tapes that Anna made as a teenager, and discovered the horrific truth behind that birthday party in the woods all those years ago.

In the video, Anna tries to help Catherine after her friends sell her to some random guys, and Catherine flees. The men turn on Anna instead, and Catherine refuses to help. The other three girls, meanwhile, watch and giggle, and even sing "Happy Birthday" as their "friend" is sexually assaulted.

Naturally, Alice was heartbroken to learn what happened to her daughter all those years ago, and she set out on her own quest for revenge. She killed Rachel, Zoe, and Helen before setting up the scene at the lake house, planting all of the evidence needed to lock Catherine/Lexi up for the crimes. Alice didn't count on Priya being such a great shot and killing Lexi, but figured she got what she deserved in the end anyhow.

As Anna finishes reading her mother's letter in the kitchen, her mother gives her a small nod from the porch acknowledging her love for Anna. Anna gives the faintest smile back, hinting that this is a secret they will all take to the grave.

What does the ending of His & Hers mean?

If you've read Alice Feeney's book then you know the series ends pretty much the same way as it does in the book, so there are no surprises here. One thing we'd love to know is exactly where Anna went during that year away, and why she didn't contact anyone as she grieved the loss of her baby girl. Still, as far as happy endings go this one is as happy as it could have been given the circumstances, and we'd like to think that Jack and Anna live a happy and trauma-free existence from here on out.

What else should I watch if I liked His & Hers?

If you've finished His & Hers and are looking for something else with a murder mystery twist to binge this weekend on Netflix, check out Harlan Coben's latest series, Run Away, or the Netflix miniseries The Beast in Me starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys. If it's another twisty murder mystery with an unexpected reveal in the finale that you're looking for, give Apple TV's Presumed Innocent a watch.
