Ingle took over the role in 1993, but Edward's character was originated in 1978 by David Lewis — making him one of the longest-running characters in daytime television. Among the story lines for one of the wealthiest men in Port Charles? A fake coma, several heart attacks and a bout with amnesia in the late 1980s. In the 1990s, Edward was charged with murder and acquitted, and later kidnapped his great-grandson, Michael (Chad Duell).
Conflicts between Edward and his daughter Tracy (Jane Elliot) also provided numerous subplots for the show, including the time Tracy committed her father to a sanitarium (he later escaped). Oh, and in true soap opera fashion, he at one point disappeared and was presumed dead before being resurrected, first as a ghost and then as a flesh-and-blood character.
