Dorothy Rodham, mother of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, died Tuesday. She was 92.

Rodham died shortly after midnight in Washington, surrounded by her family, the Clintons said in a statement.

A cause of death was not disclosed. Rodham Clinton had canceled a scheduled trip to London and Istanbul on Monday to stay with her mother.The former first lady and U.S. senator had frequently credited her mother, who was a mainstay during her 2008 presidential campaign stops, for her success and drive in politics.A Chicago native, Rodham was abandoned by her parents when she was 8 and was raised by her grandparents in California. She moved out on her own at 14 and worked as a nanny while still attending high school. She married traveling salesman Hugh Rodham in 1942 and had three children, including sons Hugh and Tony. Her husband died in 1993.
