Cheetah, Tarzan's Sidekick Chimp, Dies at 80

Cheetah, one of several chimpanzees who starred in the Tarzan films of the 1930s, died of kidney failure Saturday, according to People. He was reportedly 80 years old. One of the original chimps who starred alongside Johnny Weissmuller in the classic Tarzan films, Cheetah, sometimes credited as Cheetah-Mike, was acquired by the Weissmuller estate before the chimp retired at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, Fla. Cheetah, one of several chimpanzees who starred in the Tarzan films of the 1930s, died of kidney failure Saturday, according to People. He was reportedly 80 years old.

"It is with great sadness that the community has lost a dear friend and family member," the sanctuary wrote on its website this week.
