12-year-old Martina lives in Rome's zoo because her father is its guardian. She spends every day in the garden living strictly in contact with the zoo's animals and sometimes feels lonely for human friends. One day she befriends a young Slavic boy who has escaped from a gypsy camp. When the police arrive looking for him, he and Martina flee--riding an elephant.
