Nora Alsen, a famous doctor, is so busy with her work that she neglects her fiancé, Robert Harting. Robert seeks entertainment with Nelly Waldan, a waitress in a lunchroom. A year later: Nelly has fallen very ill and Nora is called in. In a crisis, Nelly constantly calls out Robert's name and the latter can no longer hear this and throws himself into her arms. Nora is left alone.
