Reality Winner (Emilia Jones) grows up with her sister Brittany (Kathryn Newton) and her parents Ron (Zach Galifianakis) and Billie (Connie Britton) in Kingsville, Texas. Reality develops an activist consciousness at an early age, not least because she is strongly influenced ideologically by her pacifist father. Reality dreams of going abroad after high school to do humanitarian project work. To her parents' horror, she unexpectedly allows herself to be recruited by the U.S. Air Force. But after two years of foreign language training, instead of a foreign assignment, Reality ends up with an office job where she produces translations and transcripts that lead to military attacks when suspicious activity is reported. Reality finds herself in a moral dilemma, which she tries to repress and compensate for with excessive sports, volunteer work, and donations. Although the young specialist prefers to live alone, she gets together with Andre (Danny Ramirez), who is saving up to train as a veterinarian. Their relationship comes to an abrupt end when Reality considers a job offer from a non-governmental organization without consulting him, but the offer is withdrawn because she does not have a college degree. Disillusioned, Reality joins the NSA as a translator in 2017, not least to support her now divorced, seriously ill father. When media reports about possible hacker attacks from Russia during the recent presidential election boil over and Donald Trump's administration feigns ignorance, Reality decides to leak secret documents confirming the hacking to the website "The Intercept." Reality quickly finds herself dealing with the FBI and the full force of the law.
