Old Yermolai Voevodin lives in a Siberian village. He has four sons and a daughter. But how different were their destinies. The eldest, Ignat, went to Moscow, began to perform in the circus, demonstrating remarkable strength. He is satisfied with his life and with his stories lures his brother Maxim to the city. He gets a job as a laborer at a construction site, but he constantly feels his loneliness. In his thoughts he does not break with the village, but pride prevents him from returning. The middle son, Stepan, is a man of irrepressible character, fought "for the truth" and ended up in prison. Three months before his release, he escapes and returns to the village to see his relatives, walk the earth and, as he says, gain strength to serve his sentence. In the village with his father, only his favorite Vasily and the mute Verka remain. Yermolai is having a hard time with the breakup of his family, passionately dreams of gathering all his sons under the roof of his house, but will his dream come true?
