François is a stomatologist. He lives apart from his wife, Louise, from his two daughters and his son, but maintains courteous relations with them. He has a very young girlfriend, Catherine, who has a lover her own age, Marc. François is around fifty and wants to feel young in body and mind. He moves Catherine into his home, meets Marc, and soon, like him, rides a motorcycle. During a foolish race in Paris with a young biker, François skids and falls. He ends up with an open fracture of the tibia. Once healed, François is nonetheless deeply shaken. He feels 'old.' He breaks up with Catherine and tries to reconnect with Louise, his wife, who has never stopped loving him, but Louise has grown used to her freedom-she loves her work as an antiques dealer, her life; her relationship with François can now only be one of friendship. François is alone and free.
