In Chicago, 14-year-old Annie lives with her family in the suburbs and she has been chatting in a teen chat room in Internet with 16-year-old Charlie. When they get close to each other, Charlie tells that he is actually 20 years old. They schedule to meet, but when Annie meets Charlie, she realizes that he is about 35 years old and is disappointed. However, she is seduced by Charlie and loses her virginity to her "boyfriend" in a motel. Her best friend Brittany tells the school counselor about Annie's relationship with an older man and Annie is sent to medical examination. FBI Agent Doug Tate, in charge of the investigation, visits Annie's parents, Will and Lynn. The family is torn apart; Lynn supports her daughter and Will becomes obsessed with finding the sexual predator.
