An examination of 1970's counterculture taking place over the course of three days, the birthdays of a husband, wife and teenage daughter. First, Bobbie plans to lose her virginity on her 17th birthday, but in the process discovers a family secret that ruins her day. Rob's birthday starts off badly but gets worse along the way. Kate's birthday starts off well but quickly goes downhill. Kate's birthday falls on the day of the Kent State shooting. Their daughter is missing, leaving Rob and Kate worried that Bobbie was at the protest.
