With marauding Turks pillaging the countryside, noble Marquis Jacques Antoine Saturnin d'Urfé, the lily-livered emissary of the King of France, suddenly finds himself stranded in a tangled forest. However, the wilderness is no place for powdered courtiers. As despair and sheer terror envelop him, the unprepared diplomatic envoy seeks refuge in the weather-beaten house of iron-fisted patriarch Gorcha. But now, thirst and hunger are the least of Jacques' problems. They say that which is dead cannot rise. Yet, after the dreaded encounter with the household's master, the feeble guest must confront the cadaverous Vourdalak--a vile creature drawn by warm blood and strong family ties.
