The growing epidemic of teenagers becoming illicit drug addicts and becoming convicts because of it is presented, focusing on the case of high school senior Phyllis Howard. She tells her story of the arc of her drug use, one that she did not foresee. Having known about reefers since junior high, she began smoking weed in hanging out with friends who already smoked. She liked the feeling of being high, which overcame the subsequent physical sickness. Her drug use escalated in meeting Chuck, a pusher, whose goal, like all pushers, was to get people hooked on narcotics to the point of their reliance on him. One of those people would be Phyllis, who never thought after her first hit of heroin with Chuck that she would become addicted. Addiction changed the nature of the drug use which Phyllis, after dropping to rock bottom, would need assistance to overcome if she indeed ended up being able to do so.
