A bookkeeper named Wilkins slaves for years hoping for a $10 raise so he can marry the company's stenographer, Emily, and buy a home. At the end of fifteen years, he still has not gotten his raise, and he is threatened with the loss of his job. All he has to show for his service are a few lots, which were given to him to pay off a debt. He discovers the land is under water. But then he discovers there is oil in the water, which enables him to make enough money to buy the controlling interest in the firm that had treated him so poorly.
