Actor Dexter (Jeff Goldblum) is a straight man in Ron Anderson's (Rowan Atkinson) stage revue. Dexter gets fired but falls in love with a nurse (Emma Thompson) and gets a job as the star of a musical version of `The Elephant Man', only to lose his girl by sleeping with an actress from the 'Elephant' company.
