Kathie has just been released from the Andrew Mercer Ontario Reformatory for Females after a thirty day stint for solicitation i.e. prostitution, work which she has been doing for four years, and this stint only the latest in a long string of time inside. Her "friend" Eddie not showing up to meet her in she eventually learning he having gone off with another girl and seeing the life of other girls who have been on the street much longer than her are arguably the impetuses for her to change her life, the first step speaking to Miss Walker of the Elizabeth Fry Society who routinely visited the reformatory. At first, Kathie treated turning tricks like a game before she realized it was her life. Miss Walker and the Society can only help Kathie so much, Kathie needing to have the confidence and the will to do much of the work toward the goal of what she wants, an office job. While many like Miss Walker are willing to help or give Kathie a chance, some that knew her from her past may not be quite as accepting.
