Hans Schmidt is warned that unless he arrests the notorious cheese smugglers there will be a vacancy in the Revenue Department. Hans gets on the scene, but unfortunately he is betrayed by a sneeze, for he is addicted to the habit of taking snuff. He is captured and led off to the lair of the smugglers, where he is condemned to the awful death of being fed to death on Limburger. But Hans has won the heart of Gwendolyn, the chief smuggler's daughter, and she arrives in time to save his life with an emetic. Hans rushes off and arranges with the local police to make the arrests, but remembering the debt he owes to the fair Gwendolyn, he runs on ahead to tell, them they are coming and the smugglers beat a retreat, while Hans and Gwendolyn stroll off in their love dream to the riverside. It looks bad for the smugglers but a runner arrives with a wire for Hans. Congress has placed cheese on the free list and it is no longer a crime to smuggle cheese, so Hans and the gracious Gwendolyn are free to get married.
