Senator John Calhoun Rand marries a woman fifteen years his junior, Sally Carter, and then finds, because of America's declaration of war on Germany, that he must devote all of his time to his work. Lola Walling, who plays the role of patriotic confidant to the senator so that she may gather secret information for the German government, realizes that Baron de Vorjeck of the Russian embassy is very fond of Sally and encourages their friendship. When Rand is assigned to investigate espionage activities in Washington, Mrs. Walling leads him to believe that Sally is sending messages to the Kaiser through the young Russian. Since the messages are encoded into the stitching of crocheted mufflers, Sally's newly acquired interest in crocheting convinces Rand of her guilt, until Secret Service agent Jefferson Harrow locates the spy headquarters and proves Sally innocent. Rand's happiness is doubled when his wife confesses that she has been fashioning clothes for the baby she is expecting.
