In 1940, a poor working-class young man falls in love with a young woman forced into a terrible arrangement. In order to provide for her mentally disabled brother she has to marry a sleazy and cruel yet successful businessman. Then, all of a sudden, the devastating German bombardment, known as the Rotterdam Blitz, begins.
