After three years of relationship, Lydia is suddenly abandoned by her boyfriend. Overwhelmed by grief, she throws herself into her work as a midwife and wanders aimlessly through the city during sleepless nights. On one such night, she meets Milos, a young bus driver. The two end up in bed together, but Milos does not want to continue the liaison. This new disappointment causes Lydia to focus entirely on the delivery of her best friend Salomé, who has always been her only "family." To support her friend in her postnatal depression, she spends every free minute with the infant and develops a strong bond with him. When Lydia happens to bump into Milos at the hospital after months of silence, she is holding Salomé's daughter in her arms. She lets him believe that it is her own child. Later, she seeks out Milos and tells him that the child is his... From now on, Lydia's life revolves solely around maintaining the web of lies she has spun around her dream of motherhood. The temptation to claim Salomé's daughter for herself grows ever stronger.
